Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything.
It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door.
Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed.
"Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

Chanel Windsor
college student, roommate to Tina, average height with curly brown hair, introverted and analytical
Neil Jensen
mutual friend of Chanel and Tina, tall with glasses and a friendly smile
Tina Rodriguez
college student, roommate to Chanel, petite with straight black hair, outspoken and complex
Chanel and Tina had been roommates for a whole semester and yet they still didn't know much about each other.
They were complete opposites.
Chanel was average height with curly brown hair and introverted.
Tina was petite with straight black hair and outspoken.
Every time they tried to have a conversation, it ended in a fight.
This was. going to be the last time they had a conversation though because one of them wasn't coming back to college for the second semester.
Chanel sat on her side of the room on her bed, reading a book.
She was in her last year of college, studying psychology.
Tina came in, shut the door and leaned against it with a smirk on her face.
"Hey," she said.
"Hi."
Chanel closed her book and put it aside, leaning against the headboard of her bed.
"What's up?"
Tina shrugged and walked over to her desk.
"I was thinking we could talk."
"Okay," Chanel said cautiously.
Whenever Tina wanted to talk, something bad always happened.
Tina sat down on the chair in front of her desk and crossed her legs.
"About what?"
"The fact that we know nothing about each other," Tina answered.
Chanel groaned.
"I know we're roommates but I don't really want to get to know you."
"You don't want to get to know me? Why the hell not?"
Chanel sat up straighter and looked at Tina.
Her face hardened.
"Okay, then let's not get to know each other."
Tina got up and dragged her desk chair over to Chanel's bed, placing it backwards in front of her.
She sat down on it with her arms folded over the backrest.
She stared at Chanel with an intense look in her dark eyes.
"Then let's not argue," she said.
"Tell me one thing about yourself. Just one."
Chanel looked down at her blanket, picking at a loose thread with her fingers.
"Okay," she said finally.
"I had a dog named Max when I was growing up."
Tina leaned forward, actually listening to Chanel for once.
"What breed was he?"
Chanel shrugged.
Chanel hesitated, surprised by Tina's genuine interest.
"He was a golden retriever," she replied softly.
Tina nodded, her expression softening. "I had a cat named Whiskers," she admitted, breaking the silence between them.
Chanel stared at her, surprised.
She hadn't expected Tina to have a pet.
Tina shrugged, her eyes clouding over.
"She died last year," she said quietly.
"I miss her."
Chanel nodded, feeling a pang of sympathy for Tina.
She knew how it felt to lose a beloved pet.
She had been heartbroken when Max passed away.
"Sorry," Chanel said softly.
Tina looked up at her, her eyes shining with tears.
"It's okay," she said, wiping her eyes.
"I just miss her sometimes."
Chanel nodded, feeling a sense of understanding wash over her.
For the first time, she saw Tina in a different light.
She wasn't just a mean and bitter person; she was someone who had experienced pain and loss too.
As they sat there in silence, Chanel realized that maybe they weren't so different after all.
They both had their own struggles and heartaches, but they could still find common ground and support each other.
Tina stood up from the chair and walked over to Chanel's bed.
"Can I sleep here tonight?" she asked softly. Chanel stared at Tina standing awkwardly by her bed, clutching her pillow tightly in her arms.
The tension between them was still thick from their earlier conversation about pets, but Chanel couldn't deny that Tina looked vulnerable and scared as she stood there waiting for an answer.
After a moment's hesitation, Chanel scooted over on the bed and patted the empty space beside her.
Tina crawled in, curling up against Chanel's side like a small child.
The familiar scent of strawberry shampoo filled Chanel's nose as Tina settled her head on Chanel's shoulder.
They lay there in silence, both pretending that this wasn't completely weird for them.
As the minutes ticked by, Tina's breathing gradually steadied and Chanel felt her own anxiety ebbing away. Just as sleep was starting to take hold of her, Chanel whispered into the darkness, "You know... maybe we could start fresh?"
