MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that was an understatement.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
The only thing I didn't do was write a poem about how much I despised her because I wasn't capable of doing it.
I was average, and Tina, well…
Tina wasn't average.
She was complex.
The type of complex you'd need a double major in psychology and mathematics to figure out.
I should've known better than to room with her, but I had been young, stupid, and desperate for a roommate.
I was still desperate for a roommate, which was why I had a "Find Roommate" flyer hanging on the bulletin board in the cafeteria.
I was hoping someone would see it before I killed Tina and ended up in prison for twenty-five years to life.
"Chanel," Neil Jensen said as he stopping in front of my table.
"Hey."
"Hey," I replied without looking up from my organic chemistry textbook.
It wasn't that I wasn't happy to see Neil; I just wasn't happy to see anybody at the moment, including myself.
Well, maybe that isn't entirely true.
I sort of liked Neil.
He was tall, wore glasses, and had a friendly smile that said, "I'm not going to hit on you."

I stared at my textbook, pretending to study as he settled into the chair across from me.
His backpack thudded against the floor, and he pulled out a sandwich wrapped in wax paper.
The cafeteria was loud with the hum of conversation, but our table was tucked away in a corner, so it felt like we were alone.
I traced my finger along the edge of my closed textbook, waiting for him to speak first.
He unwrapped his sandwich methodically, the wax paper crinkling.

I winced at the sound.
It grated on my already frayed nerves.
When he finally looked up, adjusting his glasses, I knew what he was going to ask.
I gripped my pen tighter and waited for him to say it.
He took a deliberate bite of his sandwich, chewing slowly as he studied my face.
I pretended to focus on my textbook, highlighting random sentences.
The peanut butter sandwich smell wafted across the table, making my stomach twist into a knot.
I hated peanut butter almost as much as I hated Tina.
He cleared his throat, and I gripped my highlighter tighter.
"So, about that roommate flyer…"
He shifted in his seat, adjusting his glasses again.
"I saw Tina earlier today."
My hand froze mid-highlight, leaving an ugly yellow streak across the page.
"She seemed pretty upset about it."

He leaned forward, his voice lowering to a whisper.
