MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that was an understatement.
I loathed Tina.
Then again, that was no better.
Let me try again.
Tina was the Spawn of Satan.
That was more accurate.
After all, I was sure the devil himself would have a complex and intriguing daughter like Tina.
That way, he could torture people with more than just fire and brimstone.
He could use Tina and her never-ending drama, plots, and constant scheming to drive them completely mad.
I was sure that I had lost a few screws living with her for the past year and a half.
I had come to college with a complete set, but Chanel and Tina’s Roommate Extravaganza had whittled them down until I was missing a couple of vital bolts.
It didn’t help that we butted heads on every issue.
We were complete opposites.
While she was petite, dark-haired, and quiet (rarely), I was average height with curly brown hair and introverted.
I analyzed every issue in front of me while she might glance at it before disregarding it completely.
We even had different majors.
While she was a communications major, I had double-majored in psychology and sociology.

I stared at the ceiling, trying to figure out what Tina wanted.
She was pacing beside my bed, her pillow clutched tightly in her arms.
This was a new one.
She had never asked to sleep in my bed before, and I was sure it wasn’t because she didn’t want to.
I was positive that this was another one of her plots.
I slowly sat up, switching on my bedside lamp so that I could study her face.
Her eyes were red-rimmed, and there were dark circles underneath them.
Her hands were shaking as she clutched her pillow, and her entire body seemed to be vibrating with tension.
Something was wrong here.
Something serious.

I cleared my throat and patted the empty space beside me.
She moved quickly to settle into it, but before she could get comfortable, I grabbed her wrist.
"Tell me what's really going on, Tina."
She yanked her wrist away from me, but she didn’t get up.
Instead, she sat heavily on my bed, clutching her pillow like a shield in front of her.
Her usual sharp tongue seemed dulled as she stared at the floor, her shoulders hunched over.
I waited for her to speak, knowing that pushing her would only make her clam up tighter.
After a few minutes of silence, she finally spoke.
"I was walking back from the library tonight."
She paused, and I could tell that she was trying to gather her thoughts.
"When I got to the corner of Elm and Main, I noticed that there were footsteps behind me. They were matching my pace. I stopped. They stopped. I turned around. They were gone."
She paused again, and I could see the tension in her body begin to ratchet up again.
"This has happened three times this week. Same pattern every time. I tried varying my route home, but it happened anyway."

Her hands twisted the pillowcase until it was balled up in a tight knot.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I asked, my voice softer than I intended.
"I thought I could handle it," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"But now... I'm scared, okay?"
