MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that wasn’t enough.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
Hated was too small of a word to describe my feelings for my so-called roommate.
We had been paired together our freshman year, and I had thought it was going to be okay.
I mean, she was nice, and pretty, and smart.
We had even bonded over our shared major, psychology, and we both wanted to be child psychologists when we graduated.
But then, only a day or two later, I found out that Tina was not nice at all.
She was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and I had been naive enough not to see it.
I should have known from the very beginning that Tina and I would never get along.
We were complete opposites.
While she was petite and beautiful with straight black hair, I was average height and beautiful in my own way with curly brown hair.
While she wore tight, revealing clothes, I wore loose, comfortable clothes.
And most importantly, we thought completely differently.
Tina jumped at conclusions and overreacted to every situation.
I thought things through and came up here with a plan before I acted.

But now, here in the middle of the night, Tina was not that girl.
She was not the girl who always knew what to say, the girl who had it all together.
She was vulnerable and scared and uncomfortable.
I stared at her, my anger from earlier slowly fading away.
And I didn’t know what came over me, but without a word, I scooted over in my bed as far as I could against the wall, leaving just enough room for her to climb in beside me.
The bed was only a twin, and very narrow, so she had to climb in carefully and awkwardly.
As soon as she was in bed, she lay back with her eyes closed tightly and her body tense.
I could feel her shaking slightly as she lay beside me.
The bed creaked under our combined weight.
Tina smelled like strawberry shampoo and sleep, and it wasn’t bad.

Neither of us spoke.
The silence between us felt like there were hundreds of things left unsaid, but neither of us said anything. I picked up my phone from my nightstand and scrolled through social media on it for a while, pretending that Tina wasn’t lying next to me, but watching her from the corner of my eye out of the corner of my eye.
"Why did you let me in?" Tina whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of our breathing.
"Because I realized you weren't the enemy I made you out to be," I replied softly, surprised at my own admission.
"I never wanted to be your enemy," she said, her voice cracking with an emotion I hadn't expected.

I didn’t know what to say.
I had never been a very good communicator.
But I knew I had to say something, so I did the only thing that came to mind.
I lifted my arm in an invitation for her to move closer.
She hesitated for a moment before shifting over and tucking her head against my shoulder.
The mattress dipped slightly with her weight, but we still had enough room for her to be comfortable.
Her breathing was uneven as she lay beside me, and I could feel her trembling slightly.
It wasn’t until she relaxed completely that I realized she was crying softly.
Without thinking, I reached out with my other arm and wrapped it around her shoulders in a comforting gesture.
"Thanks, nerd," she mumbled into my shirt.

I smiled in the darkness, realizing that maybe, just maybe, we could start over.
Tina’s breathing gradually steadied, and she lay against me for a while, her dark hair tickling my chin.
I was familiar with the scent of her shampoo, a sweet strawberry smell that always seemed to linger in the air after she showered.
But tonight, it stirred something different in me.
Her fingers absently traced patterns on my collarbone, sending shivers down my spine.
I tried to focus on the ceiling above us, the sound of the rain outside, anything except the warmth of her body pressed against mine.
It wasn’t until she shifted slightly that I realized how close she was.
Her face was inches from mine in the darkness, her eyes searching mine for something.
For a moment, I felt like I was drowning in those deep green pools, and my heart skipped a beat.
It was only when she leaned in closer that I came back to reality.
Without thinking, I turned away from her and reached over to my nightstand.

"Are you okay?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I fumbled for the lamp switch.
"Yeah," she replied, her voice steadier now, "I just... I didn't know how much I needed this."
"Me neither," I admitted, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over me as the soft light illuminated our faces.
