Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything.
It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door.
Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed.
"Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

Neil Jensen

Tina Rodriguez
college student, roommate to Chanel, petite with straight black hair, outspoken and complex
I hated Tina.
No, that wasn’t enough.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
Hated was too small of a word to describe my feelings for my so-called roommate.
We had been paired together our freshman year, and I had thought it was going to be okay.
I mean, she was nice, a little pushy and aggressive, but I figured we could find common ground.
We were both girls, both attending college.
We should have been able to find something in common, but we hadn’t.
Tina was the type of girl who liked to party, hang out with boys, and do risky things.
I was average, introverted, and analytical.
I liked to read and watch rom-coms when I wasn’t at my sorority events.
I was a little more than average, I guess.
I had gotten a scholarship to attend this school, and I wanted to make sure I made the most of it.
Tina, on the other hand, was just here for the party scene.
She loved to get drunk and high and then brag about it on Monday mornings.
She was like that one girl in class who always raised her hand when the teacher asked something and then got it wrong.
She was annoying and loud and liked to pick fights with me.
So yeah, I hated her.
I had been sleeping fitfully, but a loud knock at the door woke me up.
The clock said it was two in the morning, hours after Tina had left for her party last night.
I had been trying to study for an exam today, but the pounding music coming from down the hall had made it impossible.
I had sent her multiple texts asking her to keep it down, but she had ignored them. "Come in," I muttered gruffly, not even bothering to get up or turn on the light.
The door opened, and Tina’s head peeked in from around the corner.
Her hair was mussed, and her pillow was in her arms.
"Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren’t sleeping." She walked into the room, closing the door behind her.
"Look… Just don’t laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I… I just can’t. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face was slightly pink as she shifted from foot to foot awkwardly.
"Just don’t think that I’m a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She added as she looked at me with a calm face. "Well then…can I?"
I sat up in bed as she fidgeted with her pillow.
Her words were pleading, but they didn’t affect me much.
Last night’s party came rushing back to me—the pounding music that vibrated through our floorboards until 3 AM, the shouting and laughing of drunken students outside our window as they stumbled back to their dorms after leaving Tina’s party.
I clenched my jaw as I remembered how hard it had been to study with all of that going on around me.
"Fine," I said, shifting over to make room, knowing this was just another chapter in our complicated story.
The twin bed was narrow, and I watched as Tina awkwardly climbed in beside me.
She was small for her age, but still, she took up more than half of the available space.
Her pajamas were thin, and I could feel the warmth emanating from her through her clothes.
The mattress dipped as she settled in, trying to find a comfortable position without touching me too much.
Neither of us spoke.
The only sounds were our slightly uneven breathing and the distant hum of the vending machine in the hallway.
I lay stiffly, hyper-aware of her presence beside me.
She shifted again, tugging at the edge of my blanket with her small hand.
After a few minutes, she moved again, and her shoulder pressed against mine.
