Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything.
It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door.
Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed.
"Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

Chanel Windsor
college student, roommate to Tina, average height with curly brown hair, introverted and analytical
Neil Jensen
mutual friend of Chanel and Tina, tall with glasses and a friendly smile
Tina Rodriguez
college student, roommate to Chanel, petite with straight black hair, outspoken and complex
Chanel and Tina had been roommates for a semester, but they still managed to get into a fight at least three times a week.
The reason for this was quite simple: they were just too different.
Chanel was introverted, analytical, and methodical.
She liked to take her time and weigh her options before making a decision.
Tina, on the other hand, was impulsive, headstrong, and complex.
She could make a decision one minute and change her mind the next without any explanation.
Sometimes, it was hard for Chanel to even follow her train of thought.
Their latest disagreement was over Tina’s boyfriend, whom she had just broken up with over the phone two days prior.
Since then, Tina had been walking around trying to be strong, but Chanel could see that she had been struggling with her emotions.
Last night, while Chanel had been working on a paper, Tina had come into their room with a guy trailing behind her.
He was tall, dark, and handsome—exactly Tina’s type.
Chanel tried to ignore them as they got ready to go out, but she couldn’t help feeling suspicious of Tina’s motives.
Now, as she sat in bed watching Tina fidget near the doorway, Chanel felt a pang of concern.
She had never seen her roommate so vulnerable before.
Tina was always strong and confident, but now she looked like a scared little girl.
Chanel moved over to make some space for Tina in the bed, patting the empty spot beside her.
Tina crawled in and pulled the covers up to her chin, her eyes fixed on the ceiling.
Chanel cleared her throat and asked, "So, what’s the plan with this new guy?"
Tina stiffened beside her, her fingers clutching the edge of the blanket.
The silence between them grew thicker than a foggy morning in San Francisco.
Chanel could feel Tina’s tension radiating off of her like heat waves on a hot summer day.
Finally, Tina rolled over to face Chanel, her eyes glistening in the dim light of their room.
"I don't know, Chanel," Tina whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I thought he might help me forget, but it's not working."
Chanel nodded, understanding dawning on her. "You still love him, don't you?"
Tina shrugged, her shoulders rising and falling like the waves of the ocean.
"I don't know," she said again.
"It feels like my heart is a mess."
Chanel reached out and touched Tina’s hand, offering her a small smile.
"It’s okay," she said.
"You don’t have to figure it all out right now."
Tina looked at her, her eyes filled with gratitude.
"Thanks, Chanel. You’re a good friend."
Chanel smiled back at her, feeling a sense of warmth spreading through her chest.
"Anytime," she said.
"Now, let’s get some sleep. We can talk more in the morning."
Tina nodded, turning onto her side and pulling the covers up to her chin.
As they drifted off to sleep, Chanel felt a sense of comfort wash over her.
For the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel like she was alone in the world. It was 2:00 a.m. when Chanel heard the knock on their door.
She had been lying awake for almost an hour, unable to fall asleep due to insomnia.
She shifted in bed and looked at Tina, who was fast asleep beside her.
The knock came again, this time louder than before.
Chanel sat up and rubbed her eyes, wondering who would be visiting them at this hour.
She got out of bed and padded silently to the door, looking through the peephole to see who was there.
To her surprise, no one was standing there.
She looked again, wondering if she had imagined the whole thing.
Then, just as she was about to turn away, she saw a white envelope slide under the door.
Chanel’s heart began to race as she bent down to pick up the envelope.
It was plain white with no markings on it except for their room number written in bold black ink. She turned around and walked back to Tina’s side of the bed, shaking her awake gently.
Tina groggily opened her eyes and looked at Chanel with a confused expression on her face.
"What is it?" she asked, rubbing her eyes.
Chanel shook her head and held out the envelope for Tina to see.
"I don’t know," she said softly.
"It was slid under our door just now."
Tina sat up quickly, taking the envelope from Chanel’s hand and examining it closely.
She tore it open, and as her eyes scanned the contents, her face went pale.
Chanel stared at her, wondering what was happening.
Tina’s hands were shaking as she clutched the letter, and her eyes were wide with fear.
The paper slipped from her fingers and landed on the floor between them.
Before Chanel could reach for it, another knock came at the door.
This time, a voice called out from the other side.
"Hey, are you guys okay in there? I heard a strange noise."
It was Alex, one of their friends from down the hall.
Tina grabbed Chanel’s wrist, her fingernails digging into her skin.
"Don’t open it," she whispered, her eyes fixed on the door.
Chanel had never seen Tina this scared before.
She backed away from the door, dragging Chanel with her until they bumped into Chanel’s desk.
Chanel bent down and picked up the letter, her hands shaking as she did.
The paper felt strange under her fingers, almost like it had been textured somehow.
She turned it over in her hand, trying to figure out what was going on.
Under the desk lamp, Chanel could see faint markings on the paper.
They looked like letters carved into the surface of the paper itself.
Tina’s finger traced the indentations, and Chanel realized that they spelled out a message.
Her stomach dropped as she read the words: "I know what you two did last semester."
Chanel’s mind raced as she tried to figure out what the letter was talking about.
What secret could be worth threatening them over?
Tina's voice trembled as she whispered, "Do you think it's about the library incident?"
Chanel's eyes widened, her heart pounding in her chest. "But we swore no one saw us that night."
Tina nodded, her face pale. "Someone must have found out, and now they want something from us."
Chanel gripped the letter tightly, her hands shaking with fear.
Tina leaned in closer to her, their faces inches apart.
"What are we going to do?"
Chanel whispered back.
The knocking continued, growing louder and more insistent.
Tina's grip on Chanel's wrist tightened.
"Don't open it," she pleaded.
Suddenly, Alex's voice called out from the other side of the door.
"Hey, girls? Are you okay in there? I heard some strange noises."
Chanel reached for her phone, intending to call campus security.
But before she could dial, Tina snatched the phone from her hand and shook her head frantically.
The room felt smaller than ever before, the air thick with tension as they waited for whatever was happening outside to pass.
Finally, they heard Alex's footsteps fade away down the hallway. Chanel turned to Tina, her eyes wide with fear.
"Do you think anyone else saw us that night?"
Tina pressed a finger to her lips, signaling for Chanel to be quiet.
They heard a faint jingling sound from outside their door, like keys being shaken together.
Tina whispered urgently, "We can't let them know we're in here."
Chanel nodded, her voice barely audible, "But what if they come back with someone else?"
Tina's eyes were filled with determination as she replied, "Then we need to be ready to leave at a moment's notice."
Chanel reached under her bed, searching for her phone charger that had slipped out of sight.
Her fingers brushed against something papery on the floor, and she pulled it out.
It was a thick white envelope, similar to the one Tina had received earlier but larger.
Tina's eyes were fixed on the envelope as Chanel opened it.
A stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills spilled out, and they both gasped in shock.
Chanel counted quickly, her hands shaking with excitement.
It was five thousand dollars.
Tina grabbed the envelope from Chanel's hands, examining the bills under their desk lamp.
"This wasn't here yesterday," she whispered, her voice filled with fear.
"Someone must have planted it. But why?"
The money felt like a trap, and Chanel couldn't shake the feeling that they were in grave danger.
Tina's voice was barely a whisper, "Do you think it's hush money for the library incident?"
Chanel shook her head, her mind racing, "Or maybe they want us to do something else in return."
Tina's eyes narrowed as she looked at the door, "Either way, we can't stay here and wait to find out."
Chanel shoved the envelope of money into her backpack, the sound of the bills rustling as they fell into the bag.
Tina peered through the peephole in their door, watching the hallway.
Suddenly, she gasped, "He's coming."
She motioned for Chanel to hurry, and they both slipped out of the room, trying to make as little noise as possible on the carpeted floor.
Alex turned the corner toward the stairwell, and they followed behind him at a distance.
They ducked behind a vending machine when he glanced over his shoulder, waiting for him to continue walking before following again.
Chanel's heart pounded in her chest as they descended the stairs, always staying one floor behind Alex.
Finally, he exited the building and walked off toward the library.
Tina grabbed Chanel's sleeve and pulled her into the shadows of the bushes outside their dormitory.
They crouched together, their breath visible in the cold night air.
Suddenly, footsteps crunched on the gravel path nearby.
A tall figure in a dark coat approached, stopping just a few feet from their hiding spot.
"I know you're there," a woman's voice said softly.
Chanel's muscles tensed as the woman stepped closer, her heels clicking against the concrete.
She peered directly at their bush, her face half-hidden by shoulder-length silver hair.
"I can help you understand the money's purpose," she whispered, extending a gloved hand toward them.
Chanel stared at the woman's outstretched hand, her pulse thundering in her ears.
The leather of the glove gleamed under the security lights, and the woman waited patiently, not taking another step closer.
Tina grabbed Chanel's sleeve and shook her head frantically, but something in the woman's calm demeanor drew Chanel forward.
Her fingers trembled as she reached out from behind the branches, her palm touching the cool leather of the glove.
The woman helped Chanel up from the damp ground, her grip tightening slightly when Chanel tried to pull away.
She led Chanel across the campus, her heels clicking steadily on the concrete path, while Tina trailed behind, muttering curses under her breath.
The streetlights cast long shadows across the quad, and they passed by the science building before heading toward the older part of campus.
The woman's coat billowed slightly in the night breeze, revealing a flash of something metallic at her hip.
Chanel's pulse quickened, but she kept walking, remembering the five thousand dollars weighing down her backpack.
