MidReal Story

Cuddles with My Hot Roommate

Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

I hated Tina.
No, that wasn’t enough.
I loathed Tina.
Detested her.
Abhorred her.
Hated was just too small of a word to describe my feelings for my so-called roommate and friend.
We had been paired together our freshman year, and I had thought it was going to be a good match.
She was outgoing; I was introverted.
She was flighty; I was analytical.
I figured we would balance each other out.
But then I didn’t realize I had been paired with the most contradictory, complex person on the planet.
We disagreed on everything, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never seem to get through to her.
I swear, sometimes I thought she purposefully went against me just because she could.

I stared at the ceiling, trying to decide what to do.
Before I could answer her, a low rumble shook the building.
Tina jumped, and before I could even say anything, she had scrambled onto my bed without permission.
The rumble grew louder, and the building shook more violently.
We heard screams from outside.
I rushed to the window with Tina right behind me.
We looked out into the darkness, and I could just barely make out a large shape moving between the buildings downtown.
The emergency sirens started wailing.
The shape grew larger as it moved closer, and I realized that it was some sort of animal.
It was huge, with spines running down its back that glowed an eerie blue color.

Tina grabbed my arm so tightly that it hurt.
A flash of light lit up the sky, and we heard a deafening roar as something exploded in the distance.
"Do you see that?" Tina whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and awe.
"Yeah, I see it," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. "We need to get out of here before it gets any closer."
"But where do we go?" she asked, her eyes wide with panic.

I studied her face, trying to decide what to do.
She looked so vulnerable, and for a moment, I felt a pang of sympathy for her.
But then I remembered all the times she had hurt me, and my heart hardened.
"Fine, get in," I muttered, sliding over to make room for her.
Tina practically dove onto the bed, her cold feet brushing against my legs as she settled in beside me.
The bed creaked under our combined weight, and I heard Tina’s pillow thump against mine as she settled in.
Another explosion rocked the building, and Tina flinched, unconsciously pressing closer to me.
I heard the distant sound of sirens and screams as people tried to flee from the creature.
My phone buzzed on the bedside table, and I reached over to grab it.
I had a text from Elijah, my ex-boyfriend.

"Need help. At Franklin Hall."
I deleted the message without responding.
The creature's roar echoed through the night, and I knew there was no turning back.
