It was a typical Thursday evening at Smithson University, with most students either in their dorm rooms studying or out partying with friends.
But I wasn't one to follow the crowd.
Not exactly, anyway.
I mean, sure, my best friend Sarah and I were currently in the Student Union building consuming Frappuccinos from the coffee shop on the first floor, and we were both wearing ripped jeans and tank tops to beat the heat of the late summer evening... but that's where the typicality ended.
Other than our clothing, you wouldn't have pegged us as the rebellious type.
Maybe it was because we were white girls from a predominantly white college in the Midwest, but we looked more like sorority babes than rule breakers.
I've long been blonde - bottled or not, it doesn't matter - and had green eyes, whereas Sarah had short, dark brunette hair and piercing blue eyes.
