"I think I’m going to die," I said, running my nose across the back of my sleeve for the hundredth time tonight.
My BFF, Becca, was over at my house for a movie night, but it wasn’t exactly going as planned.
We were both sick with colds, and it was driving us nuts.
Every few seconds one of us would have to pause the movie to go find some tissues.
Right now, it was my turn.
I got up off the couch, sniffling like crazy, and headed into the kitchen.
I grabbed a tissue and blew my nose.
Then I ran it under some warm water, hoping it would help all the congestion in my head.
I got back on the couch and we started the movie again.
But we only made it about five minutes before Becca needed to pause it again.
This time she got up and grabbed a tissue from the box on the coffee table.
When she sat back down, I turned to her and smiled.
"I’m so glad we’re doing this."
"Me, too," she said, blowing her nose again.
"I feel awful, but being here with you makes me feel so much better."
"I know exactly what you mean," I said, squeezing her hand.
"I love spending time with you."
We sat there for another few minutes, watching the movie and sniffling every now and then until Becca spoke up.
Crushed On
"I think I’m starting to get a little stuffy," she said, her voice sounding muffled through her nose.
She tried to focus on the movie, but it was clear that she was getting more and more uncomfortable.
She kept sniffling and wiping her nose with the back of her hand.
The sound of her congestion grew louder and louder until finally, she couldn’t take it anymore.
She paused the movie mid-scene and reached for the tissue box.
But when she opened it, she realized it was empty.
"Shoot," she mumbled, getting up from the couch.
She stumbled a little as she made her way to the bathroom, clearly feeling miserable.
I heard the sound of her blowing her nose, followed by the running tap water.
When she came back, her nose was red and raw from all the constant wiping.
Crushed On
I noticed that she was shivering a bit, even though she had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
I got up and went into my bedroom, grabbing another blanket off the bed.
I came back and tucked it around her, making sure she was warm and cozy.
"Thanks," she said, her voice sounding hoarse from all the sneezing.
Just as I was about to sit back down, she let out three quick sneezes in a row.
"Achoo! Achoo! Achoo!"
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the last tissue from my emergency stash.
I handed it to her, and she blew her nose loudly before settling back into the couch.
We both snuggled up under our blankets, looking like cocoons on the couch, and continued watching the movie.
It was a sci-fi thriller, and we were finally getting to the good part where the main character discovers the big plot twist.
Crushed On
But just as he was about to reveal it, the screen suddenly went black.
The humming sound of the heating vent in the wall stopped too.
I fumbled around in the darkness for my phone to turn on the flashlight app, but before I could find it, Becca let out another loud sneeze. The sound of it echoed through the room, followed by an eerie silence.
"Did the power just go out?" Becca asked, her voice a mix of confusion and concern.
"Yeah, and right at the best part," I replied, trying to sound more annoyed than worried.
Crushed On
"But you know what this means, right?" she said, her eyes wide with realization. "We might finally have to confront that ghost you swore was haunting your house."
As the power remained out, Becca and I sat in the dim room, wrapped in our blankets.
We had given up trying to find candles or flashlights and decided to just wait it out.
The darkness seemed to amplify the sound of our sniffles and sneezes, making it feel like we were in some kind of bizarre, silent movie.
Suddenly, Becca turned to me with a serious expression on her face.
Her eyes looked huge in the darkness, and her runny nose glistened under the faint moonlight that peeked through the curtains.
"You need to tell Josh how you feel," she said, her voice low and hoarse from all the sneezing.
I was taken aback by her sudden change of topic.
"Josh?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I reached for another tissue from the box on the coffee table.
"Yes, Josh," she replied, her tone unwavering despite her stuffy nose.
"You can’t keep pretending like everything is fine between you two. Trust me, I know how it feels to be in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same way."
Crushed On
I felt a lump form in my throat as I processed her words.
Becca had been through a lot lately, dealing with her own heartbreak and family issues.
The last thing I wanted was to burden her with my problems too. "It’s okay," I said softly, reaching out to squeeze her hand.
"You don’t have to worry about me."
But Becca wasn’t having it.
She squeezed my hand back firmly, her eyes locked on mine in the darkness.
"I’m serious, Kayla," she said, her voice filled with conviction.
"Life’s too short to wait around for someone who doesn’t see how amazing you are. You deserve better than that."
I sat there for a moment, absorbing her words.
The room was quiet except for the occasional sniffle or creak of the old house settling around us.
Finally, I nodded slowly, knowing that Becca was right.
I couldn’t keep living in limbo, hoping that things would magically work out between Josh and me.
I needed to take control of my own happiness.
The darkness seemed to close in around us as we sat there in silence for what felt like an eternity. The only sound was the distant hum of cars passing by outside and the occasional creak of the house settling around us.
Becca’s words kept echoing in my mind like a mantra: "Life’s too short to wait."
Crushed On
"Do you really think I should tell him?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"Absolutely," Becca replied, her eyes shining with determination even in the dim light. "You owe it to yourself to be honest about your feelings."
"But what if he doesn’t feel the same way?" I whispered, fear creeping into my voice.
