The day finally came when I could hang out with Sydney and Noah, and hopefully my crush would be there too.
I got a text from Noah saying to come over to Alex’s house, which basically meant I was going to be in a friend group of two other girls and three other boys.
I was hoping that my crush would be one of the girls invited, but I didn’t know if I should wish for that or not.
If she came and we had to pair up on the couch, I would probably get nervous and she would see me for the dork I am.
On the other hand, if she came and we had to pair up on the couch, maybe she would see how perfect we are for each other and want to go out with me.
I wanted to wish for her to come, but at the same time, I didn’t because of how nervous I would be.
When I got to Alex’s house, everyone was talking except for one person—my crush, Emily.
She walked in after me with her long blonde hair down and big brown eyes looking right at me.
"Hey," I said as I walked over to my friends.
"Hey," they all replied in unison.
When Emily walked over, she smiled widely at me and said hello to everyone else.
"Hey," I said as I sat next to Sydney on the couch.
There were only six spots on the couch, so after everyone paired up, Emily was left with no place to sit.
She looked around at her options and then at me with a smirk on her face.
Crush
I shift uncomfortably as she looks around at the room.
Her eyes land on the armrest next to me, but she doesn’t move.
Sydney and Noah are cuddled up on my left, and Matt and Alex are sprawled across the other end of the couch.
Emily takes a small step forward, then pauses again.
My heart starts racing as she glances between my lap and the armrest.
Her smirk slowly fades into something more uncertain.
After what feels like forever, she moves towards me.
But just as I think she’s going to sit on my lap, she turns at the last second and perches herself carefully on the armrest.
"Guess I’ll just have to balance here," Emily says with a teasing grin, her eyes flicking to mine.
"Or you could just sit on the floor," Noah jokes, nudging Sydney with his elbow.
Crush
Emily rolls her eyes, leaning slightly closer to me, "I think this spot has the best view."
As we settle in to watch the movie, I can feel Emily shifting uncomfortably on the armrest.
Between scenes, I turn to her and whisper, "You know, this isn’t going to be very comfortable."
She shrugs, her eyes fixed on the screen.
I lean back against the couch cushions, trying to relax.
But as the movie continues, I find myself glancing over at Emily more and more.
She’s still perched on the armrest, her legs crossed and her arms folded tightly across her chest.
Finally, during a commercial break, I turn to Noah and say, "You know what would be more fun than watching a movie? Playing Truth or Dare."
Noah immediately perks up at this suggestion.
"Definitely," he agrees, pulling out his phone.
"I have a dare generator app. We can use that."
Crush
Sydney groans playfully beside him, but she knows better than to argue with Noah when he’s got an idea in his head.
"Come on," Noah says, standing up from the couch and moving over to the coffee table.
"We can play around this table."
The others agree, forming a circle around the coffee table.
Emily slides down from the armrest and sits cross-legged on the floor next to me. As we wait for Noah to get his phone ready, I can feel Emily’s eyes on me again.
I try not to look at her too much, but it’s hard not to notice how pretty she is in the dim light of Alex’s living room.
When Noah finally has his phone ready, he looks up at us with a grin.
"Okay," he says.
"The first person is…"
He pauses for dramatic effect before continuing.
"Emily!"
Emily looks surprised for a moment before she smiles and says, "Okay. Truth or Dare?"
Noah thinks for a moment before answering, "Dare."
"Dare it is," Emily says with a shrug.
Noah looks down at his phone before reading out her dare: "Sing a song out loud."
Crush
Emily rolls her eyes good-naturedly before standing up and singing a quick rendition of "Happy Birthday."
We all clap politely when she finishes before Noah moves on to the next person. As we continue playing Truth or Dare, I start to notice something strange happening.
Every time someone gets a dare that they don’t want to do, they choose Truth instead.
And every time someone gets Truth, they end up revealing something embarrassing or awkward about themselves.
