After a ballet class, a shorter and younger girl then decided to lift and carry a taller and older girl around the dance studio
Emma Martin
She is a determined and introspective high school ballet student. She is persistent, hardworking, and humble. After a challenging dance class, Emma's friend, Maddie, encouraged her to carry her across the threshold as a sign of good luck. Despite feeling embarrassed, Emma persevered and did as her friend asked. As she struggled with the heavy wooden door, she reflected on her difficult home life and found solace in the support of her friends at school.
Ben
He is a popular high school student who has been crushing on Emma for some time. He is observant, charming, and considerate. When he saw Emma struggling with the door, he quickly intervened to help her and expressed admiration for her determination in pursuing her ballet dreams despite facing challenges at home. His presence adds tension to Emma's situation as she navigates her feelings and attempts to maintain focus on her goals.
Maddie
She is a cheerful and outgoing high school student who shares a bond with Emma through ballet. She is creative, friendly, and supportive. Maddie suggested the idea of carrying Emma across the threshold for good luck. Her playful spirit is evident when she asked Emma to do so despite knowing it would be embarrassing for her. Through this act of friendship, Maddie showed Emma that she values their friendship above petty conventions.
It was a good idea at the time.
Or so I told myself.
I should have known better.
After a long morning of ballet class, the last thing I should have been doing was trying to lift and carry someone else.
But Maddie had the idea in her head, and once that happened, there was no going back.
"Carry me over the threshold," she said, giggling.
"Just like you’re taking me across the threshold into our new home."
"You mean our dorm?"
I clarified, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah. Although I guess it would be more symbolic if we did it here."
She glanced up at the high school, where we had just finished our morning dance class.
"It’s where we started."
Where we started?
It sounded like one of those cheesy lines from a movie that I would never be able to pull off in real life.
But here I was, trying to do just that.
"Okay," I said finally, sighing.
"But if I drop you, it’s on you."
"Oh, it’s going to be fine," she said confidently.
"I’m not that heavy."
I disagreed silently but figured it wasn’t worth arguing about.
Instead, I walked over to her and tried to wrap my arms around her waist.
She was right; it wasn’t that bad.
Not too heavy at all.
I shifted my feet, trying to find a better balance as she settled into my arms.
The polished wood floor of the dance studio reflected our awkward position in its surface, making it seem even more precarious than it actually was.
My muscles strained as I took the first tentative step forward, my arms trembling slightly.
Maddie’s giggling wasn’t helping my concentration.
I glanced up to see Ben watching us from near the mirrors, a mix of concern and amusement on his face.
The door to the studio seemed miles away, and I had no idea how I was going to get there without dropping her.
My ballet slippers slid slightly on the floor with each careful step I took.
Sweat began forming on my forehead, and I focused all my energy on keeping Maddie steady in my arms.
I finally reach the heavy wooden door, my arms shaking under her weight.
Setting her down carefully, I wipe my damp forehead with the back of my hand.
Ben walks over to us, his eyes bright with amusement.
"That was impressive," he says, nodding at my still-trembling arms.
"Didn’t think you had that kind of strength in you."
Before I can respond, Maddie jumps in with her usual mischievous grin.
"Oh, Emma’s stronger than she looks," she says.
"I bet she could carry you too."
Ben chuckles, shaking his head.
"Not sure I’m ready to test that theory," he replies, glancing at me with a teasing smile.
After setting Maddie down, I take a deep breath and try to catch my breath.
My arms still ache from the effort of carrying her.
Maddie grins at me, nudging me playfully.
"Come on, just try," she urges, pushing me gently in Ben’s direction.
I hesitate for a moment, glancing at Ben, who is watching us with an amused expression.
"Go on," he says, stepping closer to me.
"I’m curious to see if you can pull it off."
My heart starts racing at the thought of trying to lift him.
It’s absurd, but I can’t help but smile at the idea.
Ben extends his arms out to the sides playfully, as if challenging me to give it a shot.
I take another deep breath and step forward, reaching out to grasp his waist.
