Hwa is a 19 year old korean boy who is currently on his period during class he gets menstrual cramps so during class he tries to get in a comfortable siting spot during class
Today I woke up and my lower stomach hurt.
I'm nineteen so I know that I'm not pregnant but I can’t get pregnant anyway.
I thought maybe I ate something bad but then I remembered that next week is my birthday and I will be turning twenty.
Wait, no.
That's not right.
I thought to myself.
Oh wait, yes it is.
I will be twenty next week.
Oh shit, I'm almost an adult.
I thought to myself as I got out of bed to start getting ready for school.
I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and got on some comfortable clothes before making my way out the door.
As I walked into class, Jihoon turned around and smiled.
"Hey what’s up?"
He asked as I took my seat next to him.
"Not much"
I replied.
Minji then turned around and smiled "Hey Hwa"
I took a deep breath, trying to will the cramps away as I walked out of the classroom with Jihoon and Minji.
The bright fluorescent lights in the hallway seemed to intensify the pain, making my eyes water.
"Hey, you sure you're okay?" Jihoon asked again, his brow furrowed with concern.
I nodded, not trusting my voice to stay steady.
Minji slipped her arm through mine, her grip gentle but firm. "Let's get you to the nurse's office," she said, her voice soft but insistent.
I hesitated, not wanting to make a scene or draw attention to myself.
But Minji's grip tightened, and she steered me towards the stairs. "Come on, Hwa. You're not going to make it through the rest of the day like this."
The sound of chatter and laughter from our classmates receded as we descended to the lower floors, replaced by the muffled hum of the school's ventilation system.
The nurse's office was a small, windowless room with a faint scent of disinfectant and stale air.
Minji guided me to a narrow bed in the corner, where I collapsed with a sigh of relief.
The nurse, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, bustled over to examine me. "What seems to be the problem, dear?"
I took another deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. "I...I have menstrual cramps," I stammered, feeling a flush rise to my cheeks.
The nurse's expression softened. "Okay, let me get you some pain relievers. Minji, can you get me a glass of water?"
As Minji nodded and turned to leave, Jihoon slipped into the room, his eyes fixed on me with concern. "Hey, do you need anything else?"
I shook my head, feeling a wave of gratitude towards my friends. "Just...just stay with me for a bit," I whispered.
Jihoon sat down beside the bed, his voice low and steady. "You know, turning twenty isn't just about getting older. There's something important you should know about our family, Hwa."
I blinked, confusion mingling with the pain. "What do you mean, Jihoon?"
He hesitated, glancing at Minji who had just returned with the water. "It's about why you can't get pregnant... there's a reason beyond what you've been told."
As I sat in the nurse's office, the painkillers began to take effect, numbing the sharp stabs in my belly.
Jihoon and Minji exchanged worried glances, their concern palpable, like a thick fog that hung in the air.
I rubbed my belly absentmindedly, trying to process Jihoon's cryptic mention of a family secret.
The room was silent except for the ticking clock, each second stretching into an eternity, like a slow-moving river that refused to flow.
Minji broke the silence, her voice gentle but firm. "Hey, why don't we skip the rest of the day? You can barely sit up."
Jihoon nodded in agreement, his eyes never leaving mine. "Yeah, I'll walk you home. You need to take it easy."
Reluctantly, I agreed, knowing I needed time to think, to unravel the tangled threads of Jihoon's words.
As we left the school, the bright sunlight was a harsh contrast to the dimly lit nurse's office, making me squint.
I felt a mix of relief and apprehension about uncovering more truths, like a seesaw teetering precariously in the balance.
The cool breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers, but I barely registered it, my mind still reeling from Jihoon's enigmatic statement.
We walked in silence, our footsteps echoing off the pavement, until Jihoon spoke up. "Hey, Hwa? You want to grab some tea at my place? My mom's got some herbal stuff that might help with the cramps."
I nodded, still lost in thought, as we turned onto Jihoon's street.
The familiar sight of his house loomed ahead, its cheerful yellow walls and bright blue door a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside me.
Just as we reached the front gate, Jihoon's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his eyes scanning the screen before his face fell.
"What's wrong?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat as he hesitated.
Jihoon glanced at me, his expression a mix of worry and urgency. "It's my mom. She says we need to talk as soon as possible."
Minji exchanged a quick look with Jihoon, then turned to me. "Hwa, I think this is about the family secret he mentioned earlier."
