We were high school sweethearts, but he went to WWF Smackdown while I was on WWF Raw.
I hated it there, I was miserable, depressed and even self harmed.
I called Brian crying one night, telling him how much I hated it there and that I wanted to switch to WWF Smackdown with him.
He calmed me down and told me he would talk to Vince about it the next day.
The very next day, Vince called me into his office, only to tell me that he couldn’t switch me to WWF Smackdown because he needed me on WWF Raw.
I was shocked and speechless, I couldn’t talk.
I left Vince’s office in tears, feeling like my life was over.
That night, I called Brian again, telling him what happened with Vince and how much I hated being on WWF Raw.
He stayed on the line with me for a while until he heard his dad, Jerry The King Lawler, coming home.
He told me he would talk to his dad about it that night and that everything would be okay.
The next day, my dad received a call from Jerry Lawler and Stu Hart, my dad, answered it.
I sit on the edge of my bed, my hands shaking as I take the phone from Dad.
The plastic feels cold against my palm.
Dad lingers in the doorway, arms crossed, watching me with concern.
"Hello?"
I manage to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Genny, sweetheart, how are you holding up?"
It’s Jerry’s familiar drawl on the other end of the line.
I swallow hard, trying to find my voice.
"I—I don’t know," I admit, feeling a lump form in my throat.
"I just can’t believe Vince won’t let me switch to Smackdown."
Jerry sighs, his tone sympathetic.
"I know, baby girl. Brian told me everything. We talked about it for hours last night."
My grip on the receiver tightens.
"What did he say?"
"Well," Jerry begins, "Brian and I have a plan. We’re going to talk to Vince together. You see, Genny, your dad and I have been in this business a long time. We have connections. And we’re not going to let Vince push us around."
I can hear the determination in Jerry’s voice, and it gives me a glimmer of hope.
"What are you going to do?"
I ask, my curiosity piqued.
"We’re going to make him an offer he can’t refuse," Jerry replies with a hint of mischief in his voice.
"You see, your dad and I have some pull in this industry. We’ve been around for a while, and we know people who know people. We’re going to make sure Vince understands that it’s not just about you or Brian—it’s about our families." My heart skips a beat as I realize what Jerry is implying.
"You mean...you’re going to threaten him?"
I ask cautiously.
Jerry chuckles.
"Oh no, baby girl. We’re not going to threaten him. We’re just going to remind him that there are consequences for playing games with the Harts and the Lawlers."
I feel a surge of gratitude toward Jerry and my dad for standing up for me like this.
"Thank you, Jerry," I say sincerely.
"Don’t thank me yet," Jerry responds with a hint of humor in his voice.
"We still have to get Vince on board. But trust me, Genny. Your dad and I are going to make this happen."
"Do you really think Vince will listen?" I ask, doubt creeping into my voice.
Jerry chuckles softly, "He'll have no choice once he sees what we bring to the table."
Dad steps forward, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder, "We’ve got your back, Genny. This is just the beginning."
I pace back and forth in my bedroom, my mind racing with thoughts as Dad makes the call to Vince on speakerphone.
Jerry Lawler’s voice joins in, and they waste no time laying out their demands.
"You’re destroying my daughter," Dad growls into the phone.
"And Brian’s performance is suffering too," Jerry adds.
Vince tries to argue, but Dad cuts him off, his voice firm.
"I’m going to call every wrestling promoter from Calgary to Memphis. I’ll make sure no one wants to work with you."
There’s a pause, and I can sense the tension in the air.
Then Vince’s tone changes, his voice laced with uncertainty.
"Fine, she can move to Smackdown next week."
I grip Dad’s arm tightly, relief washing over me.
