I push off the ground with one foot on the pedal of my bicycle, balancing myself as I hit the incline of the ramp.
I pick up speed and pump my legs harder, going faster and faster until I hit the steep part of the ramp and launch myself into the air.
I spin around twice, landing on both wheels before coming to a stop at the bottom of the ramp.
The crowd cheers as I come to a stop in front of the large concrete bowl of the skatepark.
I grin from ear to ear, loving the rush of adrenaline that runs through my veins whenever I perform a stunt like that.
"Nice job," one of the other skaters tells me as I ride over to the side of the ramp.
"Yeah, thanks," I reply, taking off my helmet and running my fingers through my hair.
It’s a habit I’ve had since I was a kid, and something I’m completely unaware of.
I look up at the large ramp I just rode, thinking about how I can top that next time.
I’ve been riding this skatepark for a few months now, ever since I got tired of riding my horse on the trails back home.
My father’s ranch is still back in Texas, but after helping him get back on his feet after some financial struggles he faced a few years ago, I decided it was time for me to do something I wanted to do.
So I left the ranch in capable hands and moved out here to California.

I walk around the ramp, looking at it from all angles as I try to figure out what I’m going to do next.
The sun is beginning to set, casting long shadows across the concrete and making the steep part of the ramp look even bigger than it did before.
I can see the curve of the ramp and know that if I hit it just right, I could get some serious air.
Caleb rides up beside me, his wheels scraping against the pavement as he comes to a stop.
He’s been riding with me for a few months now, and he knows what that look in my eye means.
"What are you planning?"
Caleb asks, watching as I calculate the angles of the ramp.
"I’m thinking about hitting that steep part at full speed," I tell him, pointing to the curve of the ramp.
"I want to launch myself into a backflip combined with a tailwhip."
"Whoa," Caleb replies, his eyes widening as he looks up at the steep part of the ramp.
Cowboy Stunt Rider
"That’s a pretty big trick."
"I know," I reply, already knowing that this is going to be a tough one.
"But I’ve been practicing both parts of it separately for weeks now. I think I’m ready to put them together."
Caleb nods in agreement and watches as I mount my bike and adjust my helmet.
"Just be careful, alright?" Caleb says, concern lacing his voice.
Cowboy Stunt Rider
"I will," I assure him, though my heart is pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves.
"Remember what you told me about taking risks—it's only worth it if you're sure you can handle the fall."
I position my bike at the top of the ramp, gripping the handlebars tightly as I visualize the sequence of moves in my mind.
Caleb stands a few feet away, giving me a thumbs up as the other riders clear the area.
The setting sun casts long shadows across the park, but the ramp is still well-lit, illuminated by floodlights that turn on automatically as dusk falls.
My heart pounds in my chest as I adjust my helmet one last time, making sure it’s securely fastened.
I take three deep breaths, reminding myself of all the countless hours I’ve spent practicing each component of this trick separately.
I know I can do this.
Rolling back twenty feet to gain maximum approach speed, I pause for a moment at the top of the incline.
A small crowd has gathered around the bottom of the ramp, their whispers carrying across the park as they watch me prepare to attempt this ambitious stunt.
Sydney appears at the bottom of the ramp, crossing her arms over her chest and watching me intently.
I push off, feeling the rush of air as I commit to the leap.

Pedaling hard, I rocket up the curved ramp.
The world tilts as my bike leaves the surface, and I pull back on the handlebars to initiate the backflip.
Time seems to slow as I rotate backward through the air, the lights of the skatepark blurring above me.
My hands grip the frame of the bike, and I start the tailwhip, forcing the bike to spin beneath me while I hang suspended in mid-air.
Faces flash by in a blur as I complete the rotation—Caleb’s worried expression, Sydney’s intense gaze, and a sea of other riders who have gathered to witness this daring attempt.
