Chapter 1
I was in the middle of a hunt when it happened.
One moment I was tracking a demon through the woods, and the next I was standing in the middle of New York City.
It was like nothing I’d ever seen before.
The buildings were so tall they seemed to scrape the sky, and there were so many people that I could barely move without bumping into someone.
I must have looked like a madman, standing there with my sword strapped to my back and my tattoos on full display for everyone to see.
But no one paid me any mind as they rushed past me on the crowded sidewalk.
They had places to be, things to do.
There’d been no bright light, no time portal—nothing to warn me that I was about to be transported here against my will.
The air felt different somehow, like a sudden gust of wind…though not quite.
The first thing I noticed was the smells.
No blood, no dirt.
Just exhaust and something sweet that I couldn’t place.
It didn’t take me long to figure out that I wasn’t in my world anymore.

I hadn’t been in New York City since I was a kid, but there was no mistaking it for another place.
A vendor selling hot dogs and pretzels scowled at me when I stepped too close to his cart, eyeing him like I might rob him or something.
"Spare some change for a hungry traveler?" "No."
I reached into the pocket of my jeans and pulled out a handful of coins—only later would I realize that they were American dollars—and dropped them onto the counter without counting them first.
"I’ll take one with everything on it."
The man picked up one of the hot dogs with what looked like two metal tongs and wrapped it in wax paper before handing it over to me.

He didn’t say anything else, and I walked away from his cart with a shrug.
I was more curious than anything to see what would happen if I tried to buy something here.
Would the money disappear?
Apparently not.
As I bit into the hot dog, I looked around at the people rushing past me on their way to work or school or wherever it was they were going.
They all had somewhere to be, something to do.
I was just in their way.
As far as I could tell, no one else had appeared out of nowhere like me.
But then again, how would you even know if someone was from another world?
They could have been here for years and no one would be any wiser.
I pulled out my phone, but there was no signal here in this strange new place.
My stomach growled again as I finished off the hot dog and tossed the wrapper in a nearby trash can.
People gave me strange looks as they passed by me on the sidewalk.
Their eyes lingered on my sword—or maybe it was because of my tattoos?
