College athlete Evan Fisher is struggling to balance his star status on campus with the responsibilities he has to his family, especially his younger siblings, but when he develops a connection with his literature professor, Prof. Campbell, he starts to wonder if the risk of pursuing a relationship with her is worth it.
“Man, you’re crazy,” Nick says with a shake of his head.
We’re sitting in the back of the classroom with our desks pushed together so we can talk.
I’ve known the guy since we were kids playing football on the same team, and he’s one of my best friends.
“You’re giving up a full ride to play football so you can work at some hotel?”
I shrug and lean back in my chair.
I’m tired of arguing the point with everyone, tired of the looks I get when they think I’m not listening.
“So what if I am?”
Nick runs a hand through his hair and looks around to make sure no one can hear us.
We’re in a literature class with Professor Campbell, and while she’s a great teacher and all, she’s also really strict.
She’d kick our asses if she caught us talking about anything other than her class.
“You know what she makes us read.” He nods toward the front where Professor Campbell is writing on the board.
Right now it’s covered in lines of poetry from some famous writer, and I have to admit, it’s pretty good stuff.
He leans in closer.
“She probably makes more money than half the people who wrote these poems.
You could be there one day.”
I give him a look.
“You’re telling me that I’m going to play football for a few years and then make millions of dollars?”
He shrugs and leans back in his chair.
“You never know, man.
You could get picked up by an NFL team and be set for life.”
I snort at that.
Yeah, right, like that’ll ever happen.
Nick doesn’t know anything about my situation at home, how our parents left us to go live on an island somewhere with no phone or internet access so they don’t have to talk to their kids.
He doesn’t know how expensive it is to take care of three people when you’re only twenty years old.
Hell, he doesn’t even know that I have three younger siblings who are still in high school.
“What’s going on back there?”
I turn around to see Professor Campbell pointing at us with a smile on her face.
She came out of nowhere; I didn’t even hear her walk up to us.
“Sorry,” I say.
“Just talking about how much we love this class.”
Nick gives me a look like he can’t believe I’m lying to the professor, but to my surprise, she just laughs and shakes her head before walking away.
“Man, that chick is smoking hot,” Nick says as he stares after her.
I nod my head in agreement as I do my best to keep my eyes off her ass as she writes on the board.
Professor Campbell is the stuff that dreams are made of—long legs, shiny black hair, and curves for days.
She’s so far out of my league that I don’t even consider her an option .
