I was about to leave home for a night out with my friends, Pedro and Isabela, when my mother decided to give me a last-minute speech about how I should be careful and come back early.
Sure, I was a bit of a troublemaker – the kind of guy who always carries a pack of cigarettes in his pocket even though he’s only 15 – but there was no way I’d be getting into any real trouble tonight.
She didn’t know about that, though.
I told her not to worry and promised to be back before midnight, which wasn’t going to happen anyway, but she didn’t need to know that.
After all, I couldn’t show up at the bar we were planning on going to that early.
That would make me look like a loser.
I had just put on my jacket when my dad called me from the living room.
“Lucas, can you come here for a second?”
I groaned in annoyance, wondering what he wanted.
“Dad, I’m almost late,” I complained.
“Can it wait?”
“I’m sure it can,” he replied in a tone that didn’t leave room for further argument.
“Now get in here.”
I shot my mom an annoyed look before heading to my bedroom, where I found my father standing by the window with his arms crossed over his chest.
He was a tall man with brown hair like mine and the same green eyes I had inherited from him.
He was also very serious, which made me even more anxious to know what he wanted.
“Shut the door,” he told me, so I did as he ordered before allowing myself to sit on the bed across from him.
“Okay, what is it?”
I asked impatiently after a moment of silence.
“What do you need to talk about?”
“Your mother and I are very worried about you,” he began slowly.
“With your recent behavior…”
“Recent?”
I raised an eyebrow in disbelief.
“I’ve been like this for years now!
How come you’re only bringing this up now?”
My dad narrowed his eyes at me.
“Don’t interrupt me, Lucas,” he warned.
“I’m not in the mood for your sarcasm.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Well, I’m not in the mood for a lecture, so we’re just going to have to deal with that, aren’t we?”
Pedro Oliveira, a wise guy who had been a friend of my parents since forever and who now acted as an uncle figure for me, always said I had a big mouth.
He was right in some ways, but come on!
I couldn’t be blamed for defending myself, could I?
Of course, my dad didn’t seem to care about Pedro’s opinion.
“You need to start taking things more seriously!”
he scolded, his voice rising.
“Be respectful towards your teachers, do your homework, don’t get into trouble, don’t smoke…”
“And you also need to learn how to shut up when someone’s talking,” I added, trying to sound as calm as possible.
The last thing I needed was for him to start yelling at me again.
His lectures were already annoying enough as they were.
My father took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a second before speaking again.
“We just want what’s best for you,” he said after a moment of silence.
“We want you to be happy.
“I am happy,” I replied, confused.
“Are you sure?”
he asked, his voice softer now.
“Then why are you behaving like this?
Why are you acting out and getting into trouble all the time?
Why are your grades getting worse?
Why are you lying?
You never used to be like this, Lucas.
Did something happen?”
I frowned, wondering if he knew something about my night out that I didn’t.
I was sure I hadn’t forgotten anything, but then what was he talking about?
Before I could ask, however, my father took a deep breath and looked me in the eye.
“You should know that we love you very much,” he said.
“And because we love you, we decided not to keep anything from you.
That’s why we thought it would be better if you found out about this from us instead of hearing it from someone else.”
I nodded, not sure what he was talking about.
Then, after taking another deep breath, he continued.
“Lucas, the reason why we called you here today is that we just got back from the doctor’s office…”
he paused for a moment, as if trying to find the right words.
I waited in anticipation.
What could possibly be so important that it required such a serious tone?
“We just got back from the doctor’s,” he repeated slowly.
“And he told us that…”
He sighed, looking at me with a sad expression.
“He told us that you’re sick, son.”
I froze in shock, my heart skipping a beat.
That didn’t make any sense.
I mean, sure, I had been feeling sick lately, but it wasn’t like it was anything serious.
I had probably just caught a cold or something.
This couldn’t be happening…
“It’s nothing too serious,” my dad tried to reassure me.
“But it is something that requires treatment.
We’ll be able to tell you more about it once we go back and talk to the doctor, okay?”
I frowned, not sure how to react.
I mean, first of all, what the hell?
Secondly, did he think he could just drop a bomb like this and expect me not to react at all?
That wasn’t possible.
I had so many things going through my head at once that I didn’t even know where to start.
The fact that my father wasn’t saying anything didn’t help either.
“So… let me get this straight,” I said finally.
“You’re telling me that I have some kind of disease, but you don’t want to tell me what it is until we go back and talk to the doctor tomorrow?”
He nodded, looking at me with a mix of sadness and concern in his eyes.
“Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m saying.”
I wasn’t sure what was worse: knowing that something was wrong with me, or not knowing what it was and having to wait an entire day before figuring it out.
“What the actual fuck?”
I said in disbelief.
My dad flinched at the curse word, but he didn’t say anything.
I sighed in frustration, running my hand through my hair as I tried to process everything that was happening at once.
This was insane…
“Alright,” I said finally after a few seconds of silence.
“I guess we’ll talk about it tomorrow then.”
He nodded slowly, as if he was relieved that I was taking it well, which only made me more annoyed for some reason.
“Good,” he said with a small smile.
“Do you want me to ask Pedro to come back later?I can tell him that something came up and that you can’t go out tonight…”
“Thanks,” I said quickly before he could finish his sentence.
“But no thanks, I think that won’t be necessary.”
“Are you sure?”
he asked, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.
“You don’t have a choice anyway,” I said with a shrug, trying not to get angry again.
“That’s not what I meant and you know it,” he said, frowning.
“We’ll talk about it later, okay?”
“Whatever you say, dad.”
I left the room before he could say anything else, quickly going back to my bedroom.
I needed some time alone.
And maybe a beer or two.
I had barely opened the fridge when my phone rang.
I frowned in confusion, not recognizing the number.
I hesitated for a second before deciding to pick it up.
“Hello?”
I said as I answered the call.
I froze, my eyes wide open in shock.
The clown was back.
“Lucas Silva,” he said solemnly.
“It’s time for you to come back.”
I didn’t have time to reply before the line went dead, leaving me standing there with my mouth open, staring at the phone in disbelief.
“What the actual fuck?”
I said again, feeling like a broken record.
I was about to put the phone back on the counter when it rang again.
This time, it was an image that appeared on the screen, instead of a number.
It was a dark red balloon, floating in the air.
And even though it wasn’t moving at all, there was something about it that gave me chills down my spine.
This was bad…
I grabbed my backpack and left the house without saying anything else.
I needed answers, and I needed them now.
The clown was waiting for me outside, still holding the red balloon in its hands.
Except that now, it wasn’t a clown at all.
It looked more like some kind of demon, with red eyes and long sharp fangs that were dripping with blood.
And yet, it was still smiling at me, as if it was happy to see me again.
“The world of kids’ imagination is in danger,” it said as soon as I walked up to him.
“All of your favorite characters from those old movies are fighting each other right now, and they’re planning on invading the real world soon if we don’t do something about it.”
“So, what do you want me to do about it?”
I asked, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.
I was still trying to process the fact that the demon in front of me was real, and that he was telling me that all those characters I had grown up with were about to destroy the world.
Why me, though?
How was this my problem?
“You’re the only one who can save them, Lucas Silva,” the demon said.
“Because you’re the only one who can control them.”
“I don’t even know what that means!”
I said in frustration.
“What are you talking about?”
He didn’t reply, though.
Instead, he just grabbed my arm, and before I could say or do anything else, he pulled me towards him and started walking away.
“Come with me,” he said as we walked further and further away from my house.
“Let me show you something first, and then you can decide if you want to help us.”
“Where are we going?”
I asked, frowning.
But he didn’t reply.
He was moving so fast that I had to run to keep up with him.
He stopped at the edge of the forest, not far away from my house.
There was nothing there except for trees and bushes, but I could feel that something was wrong.
I could hear noises coming from inside the forest, and they didn’t sound human at all.
“Are you sure about this?”
I asked as I hesitated in front of him.
“I don’t know if I want to see what’s on the other side…”
“Don’t be such a pussy,” he said, rolling his eyes.
He was still holding my arm, and before I could say or do anything else, he pulled me towards him again.
And this time, we were both gone.
When I opened my eyes again, we were standing in the middle of a huge battlefield.
There were monsters everywhere.
And even though I couldn’t recognize any of them at first, I knew that they were characters from those old movies that I used to watch when I was a kid.
They looked different now, though.
There wasn’t anything human or cute about them anymore.
They were all distorted and grotesque, like they were trying to be scary on purpose.
I could see a huge green figure in the distance, throwing rocks at other creatures that were trying to attack it.
“Is that Shrek?”
I asked in disbelief.
Maybe I was just seeing things…
Everything was so surreal that I couldn’t believe that it was real.
But when I looked closer, I realized that it was indeed Shrek.
It was just…not the Shrek I remembered.
“Are you sure about this?”
I asked again as I looked back at the demon.
“Those things don’t look like any characters I’ve ever seen before.”
“They are the same characters you used to watch in those movies when you were younger,” he said solemnly.
“But something terrible happened…”
“What do you mean?”
I asked in confusion.
“What happened to them?”
“The world is dying, Lucas Silva,” he said as he looked around at everything that was happening around us.
“And they are dying with it.”
“Are you saying that those things are really Buzz Lightyear, Shrek and all those other characters…”
I asked slowly as I tried to process everything he was telling me.
“Or whatever is left of them…”
“Yes,” he replied with a nod.
“Why are they here?”
I asked as I looked around again.
“And why are they fighting each other?”
“They are at war now,” he said as he looked back at me.
“And they are going to invade your world if you don’t stop them.”
“But why are they fighting each other?”
“Because they can no longer dream,” he answered simply.
“And that has made them go mad.”
“I don’t understand,” I said, shaking my head in confusion again.
“And what does that have to do with me?”
“You have to remind them who they are,” he said before pointing towards a small figure that was walking towards us now.
It looked like a snowman, but there was something terribly wrong with it…
“I don’t think I can help them,” I said as I looked at the creature, trying to hold back a shiver that was running down my spine for some reason.
“That thing doesn’t even look like a snowman anymore.”
“It’s Olaf, from Frozen,” he said simply as he looked back at me, waiting for my reaction.
“Or whatever is left of him…”
“You can’t be serious…”
“He doesn’t look like Olaf!
Olaf is cute and funny and…and white!”
“I know he doesn’t look like much now,” he said calmly.
“But that thing was Olaf once, believe me.”
“How am I supposed to believe you?!”
I exclaimed angrily.
“That thing looks like…like a nightmare or something!
And you want me to believe that it was once Olaf?
There is no way…”
“Lucas, calm down,” he said, still looking at me with those dead eyes.
“I understand what you’re going through right now, but you have to listen to me… You are the only one who can save us all.”
“I still don’t understand why you need me for this!”
I shouted at him, feeling frustrated and confused at the same time.
“I’m not a hero!
I’m nothing special!
So why did you pick me?
Why did you bring me here?
Why am I supposed to fix this?
It’s not my problem!”
“Yes, it is,” he replied coldly, making sure that his dead eyes never left mine once during our conversation.
“Because you are the esquecido.”
“The what?”
I asked, frowning in confusion.
“It means the forgotten one, in Portuguese,” he explained calmly.
“Now, tell me… Do you remember how those movies used to make you feel when you were a kid?”
He didn’t even wait for my answer before he looked around and continued speaking in that same cold and emotionless voice that sounded so creepy coming out of his smiling mouth.
“It all started several years ago, when our main characters stopped dreaming…
Shrek, Fiona and Elsa were the first ones to lose their dreams, and that made them start to change…
To rot…
When that happened, the rest of us followed…
We are all connected to one another…
And when they stopped dreaming, we all stopped dreaming with them…
And that made us all go mad…monsters…
That’s when the war started…
That’s when they started to fight…
And that’s when they started to kill…
We don’t have much time left now…
We have to remind them who they are…
So they can go back to their world…
