A horror story of entering a hellish world where the character becomes Lucifer's right hand
I didn’t know what I expected when I stepped through the portal.
I didn’t expect that the ground would be made of bones.
I didn’t expect the blood-red sky or the twisted trees that clung to their rotting leaves.
But most of all, I didn’t expect that I wouldn’t be able to go back.
The portal closed behind me with a snap, leaving me alone in the dark forest.
I shivered, the silence pressing in on me from all sides.
“Enjoy your stay,” a voice said, and I jumped.
“Who’s there?”
I called out, my voice trembling with fear.
The voice laughed, low and mocking.
The devil’s not real… the devil’s not real…
“Who do you think?”
The voice called out, amused.
“It’s not… it can’t be…”
I whispered to myself, and then, louder, “Lucifer!”
“Congratulations,” he said, and a man stepped out from behind a tree.
He was tall and slender with raven-black hair and pale, inhumanly perfect skin.
His eyes were the color of rubies, and the air around him shimmered with power.
He was the most beautiful and terrifying thing I’d ever seen.
“Lucifer,” I whispered again.
He smiled at me, and I shrank away from him, my fear returning tenfold.
He laughed at my reaction and shook his head.
“You’re so gullible!” he said, walking towards me.
I turned to run but found myself stopped by an invisible wall.
He laughed again and stepped closer until he was only inches away from my face.
“You think I’d kill you?”
“I-I…” I started to say something but couldn’t find the words.
He laughed again and pressed his lips against my earlobe.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you suffer.”
And then he was gone.
I was alone again at the center of the forest, my heart pounding in my chest, sweat pouring down my face.
I fell to my knees and clutched at my chest as pain radiated through me like a lightening bolt.
“I’m going to die here,” I thought, and tears filled my eyes as the pain grew worse by the second.
“I’m going to die here!”
And then it stopped.
I looked up and saw that Lucifer was there again, standing in front of me with an amused look on his face.
“Why?”
I asked, looking up at him.
“Because I can,” he said, and his voice echoed through the clearing.
“Because it’s fun.”
“Why do you have to be so evil?”
I asked, still on my knees.
“Evil?”
he asked, surprised.
“Is that what you think?”
“You’re literally in Hell…”
“And you’re wearing a dress made of light… does that make you good?”
I opened my mouth to respond but found that I had no answer.
A look of pity crossed Lucifer’s face.
“Don’t think too hard about it,” he said as he extended his hand to help me stand.
“You’ll hurt your head.”
I took his hand and let him help me to my feet.
“How long will it take for me to die?”
I asked as he led me through the forest.
“It depends on what you run into first.”
“And if I run into you?”
He chuckled at that.
“Then it should be quick.”
“What is this place?”

“It’s the forest of souls,” he said as we walked.
“The souls of the damned?”
“You really don’t know much about Hell, do you?”
I shook my head.
There weren’t any books about Hell at the monastery, other than the Holy Scriptures, and they didn’t talk about what happened to people after they died.
“Then let me explain… the souls of the damned are not buried in the ground, like you think.”
“Instead, they are used to power the world they’re in… like a battery.”
“Their screams are like music to us.”
“And their pain is our pleasure.”
His eyes glowed red as he spoke, and the darkness around us caught fire, illuminating our path.
“That’s horrible…”
“That’s Hell,” he said.
“That’s where you are.”
“I’m not a soul…”
“No, you’re not,” he said.
“But you don’t have a soul, either… so what are you?”
I didn’t answer.
What could I say?
A fallen angel?
An abomination?
A freak of nature?
Or am I an abomination now?
“What are you going to do with me?”
He cocked his head to one side and studied me closely for a moment.
Then he shook his head and said, “Nothing…”
“Your father sent me here…”
“Did he now…”
“Yes,” I said.
“He said you’d take care of me…”
“So you’re a little lost lamb…”
He laughed at that and shook his head again.
“You humans are so funny…”
“What do you mean?”
“You think I care about you?”
“I’m a god…”
“You’re nothing to me.”
“We’ll see about that…”
“You want to be my enemy?”
He asked, amused.
“No,” I said quickly.
“Good,” he said.
“Because this world is not for the weak.”
“And you’re very, very weak…”
We walked in silence for a while after that.
I didn’t know what else to say.
The truth is, I didn’t even know if I was scared or angry or maybe even a little bit excited.
All I knew was that I was here now, and that there was no going back.
“Can I ask you something?”
I said after a while.
Did it hurt?”
When you fell from heaven?”
“Is that really what you want to know?”
“Not really,” I said, looking down at the ground.
“But I don’t know what else to talk about.”
“I didn’t fall from heaven,” Lucifer said after a moment.
“My father cast me out…”
“Because I tried to be better than him.”
“I see…”
His eyes blazed red as he spoke, and the darkness around us caught fire once again.
“We’re here,” he said as we came to a stop in front of a large gate.
“What is this place?”
I asked, looking up at the gate in front of us.
“The palace of Hell,” he said as he pushed open the gates and led me inside.
“This is where we live.”
“And where people go when they die…”
“Yes,” he said, leading me through the courtyard and into the palace proper.
“And where you’ll spend the rest of your days…”
“How long will that be?”
“It depends on how long you can stay alive.”
“And if I can stay alive forever?”

He turned and looked at me, his eyes burning with a dark fire.
You want me to get down on my knees and beg for my life?”
He laughed at that and shook his head.
“You humans are so funny…”
He said, stepping closer.
“Do you know who I am?”
“The king of Hell…”
“And do you know what it means to be the king of Hell?”
“You rule over the souls of the damned…”
“That’s one way of putting it…”
“It’s the only way,” I said.
“The only way for a human to understand.”
“And do you think you understand?”
“I don’t know…”
“Do you think you can rule over the souls of the damned?”
“If it comes down to it…”
“If it comes down to it…you don’t have a choice.”
“Then why are we even talking about it?”
“Because there is a better way.”
“A better way?”
“Do you think you’re better than me?”
“I don’t know,” I said, feeling the blood rush to my cheeks.
“I’m sorry…”
He laughed at that and shook his head.
“You’re not better than me,” he said.
“Nobody is better than me.”
“So why do you think there’s a better way?”
“The souls of the damned are not entirely evil,” he said, stepping closer.
“There is still some good in them, some light…”
“But not in your world…”
“In my world, they would have a chance to be redeemed.”
“And who would redeem them?”
“You?”
He reached out and stroked my cheek, his touch burning like fire.
“Their king…”
I pulled away from him, but he grabbed my wrist and held me in place.
“Don’t fight it, Emily…”
He said, his voice low and dangerous.
“Do you want me to kiss you?”
“I don’t know…”
“We both know that’s not true…”
He was right, of course…so I didn’t say anything.
He took a step closer and brushed his lips against mine, sending shivers down my spine.
Then he pulled away and looked into my eyes, his gaze burning with desire.
“There’s no turning back now…”
He whispered, before kissing me again.
I was so lost in the kiss that I didn’t even realize he had pulled away until he spoke again.
“Are you going to do what I say now?”
“Or do I need to remind you of what happens when you disobey me…”
“I won’t let you control me…”
My voice was shaking, and I could tell he knew I was lying.
But I didn’t care.
I had come this far, and I wasn’t about to give up now.
“Is that so?”
He said, taking a step closer.
I looked up at him and met his gaze.
There was something there…something dark and terrible that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
But it didn’t matter.
I wasn’t going to let him scare me.
“Let the souls go…”
I said, trying my best to sound confident.
He laughed at that and shook his head.
“Don’t you know anything, Emily?”
“I can’t let them go…”
“I own them.”
“And what about me?”
I asked, taking a step forward.
“Do you own me too?”
“I do,” he said, stepping closer.
