I sat in my dorm room, staring at the blank piece of paper in front of me.
I was supposed to be writing a paper on some obscure topic in history.
Instead I was thinking about my future.
More specifically I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my life.
I loved to draw, and I wanted nothing more than to become an artist.
There was just one problem, my parents.
They were both practical and insisted that I major in something that would help me get a job after I graduated.
They didn't consider art to be a real major, which pissed me off.
It took a lot of skill to become a good artist.
I was trying to follow their advice, but every time I tried to focus on my homework the blank paper in front of me stared back at me tauntingly.

My mind kept drifting back to the art store I had visited the other day.
They had a beautiful fountain pen that I had fallen in love with.
It was my dream pen, and I wanted it so badly I could taste it.
The problem was that it was expensive, and I knew my parents would never approve of me spending that much money on a pen.
I sighed and put my head in my hands.
I was so frustrated with my life right now.
I didn't know what I wanted to do with it, but I knew what I didn't want to do.
I didn't want to be stuck in some office doing paperwork all day.

That sounded like hell on earth to me.
There was a knock at the door and I looked up to see Mark standing there.
He was one of my friends from class, and he must have sensed that something was wrong because he walked over and sat next to me on the bed.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
I shrugged, not really knowing how to explain how I felt.
"I just feel so trapped. My parents are always riding me about getting good grades and finding a job when I get out of college. They don't care about what I want."
Mark nodded sympathetically.
"Have you ever thought about telling them how you really feel?" he asked gently.
"I have, but every time I try, they just brush it off like it's some phase I'll grow out of," I replied, frustration lacing my voice.
"Maybe it's time to show them how serious you are, like with that art competition coming up next month," Mark suggested, his eyes lighting up with an idea.

I stared at the pen in front of me.
It was so beautiful, and I knew it would inspire my art.
I had been looking at it for weeks, and I couldn't stand to look at it anymore without being able to use it.
I knew my parents would never approve of me buying it, so I decided to use my credit card.
As soon as the cashier rang up the sale and handed me the pen, I felt a rush of excitement mixed with guilt.
I knew I shouldn't have bought it, but I couldn't help myself.
The competition was coming up in a few weeks, and I needed something to inspire me.

I hoped that this pen would be the spark that set off my art.
The next few weeks were nerve wracking as the competition approached.
I had been working nonstop on my art, but nothing seemed right.
I was hoping that this pen would inspire me to create something amazing, but so far nothing had come from it.
I was starting to feel anxious about the whole thing, and my art was suffering because of it.
Sarah walked into the room and saw me staring at a blank piece of paper in front of me.
Mark noticed my growing frustration and suggested a change of scenery.
"Why don't we head to the park? Maybe some fresh air will help clear your mind," he proposed, already grabbing his jacket.
Just as we stepped outside, my phone buzzed with an email notification from the competition organizers, and my heart skipped a beat when I read the subject line: "Urgent Update - New Submission Rules."

My heart raced as I opened the email and read the contents.
The deadline for the competition had been moved up by a week, and I was nowhere near ready.
I felt a wave of panic wash over me, and my mind went blank.
I couldn't think of anything to draw.
I was going to disappoint my parents, and I was going to fail at this competition.
Mark noticed my distress and grabbed my arm, pulling me toward the park.
"Come on, let's go. Maybe some fresh air will help you think more clearly," he said, his voice soft and reassuring.
I nodded, still feeling stunned from the news.

We walked in silence for a few minutes before Sarah joined us.
She had a bag of snacks with her and immediately started digging through it like she always did when she was nervous.
Sarah was a petite blonde with a big personality.
She was always making jokes and trying to lighten the mood, but today she must have sensed that something was wrong because she didn't say anything right away.
Instead she just sat next to me on the bench and waited for me to speak.
I sighed and put my head in my hands.
The weight of my decision pressed down on me, and I knew it was time to choose my own path.
