Elara Thorne

Jaxon Reed
supportive friend and local blacksmith, friends with Elara and Lyra, tall with rugged features and a kind smile
Lyra Vance
competitive artist from a wealthy family, rivals with Elara but friends with Jaxon, elegant with sharp blue eyes
I’m running late for my weekly meet-up with Jaxon, but I have to finish this painting.
I’ve been working on it for over a week and today is the last day I’ll see him before I leave for the Academy.
My brush dances across the canvas, adding the final strokes of a setting sun as it reflects off the calm waters of Blackwood Lake.
Jax will love it; he’s always talking about how much he misses the lake since he had to move to the other side of Willow Creek for his apprenticeship with the blacksmith.
A knock resonates on the door.
"Come in?"
I say, not looking up.
My mother enters with a wide smile and soft eyes.
It warms my heart that she’s happy, even if she doesn’t approve of my passion for art.
"I’ve made your favorite, Elara. Chocolate cake."
I give her my undivided attention for the first time since she entered and gasp in awe.
The cake is decorated beautifully with icing flowers and vines that resemble the ones I draw in my sketchbook daily.
"You’re so talented, dear. Too bad it’s wasted on art."
She sighs and sets the cake on the table.
My smile falters, but only for a second before I school my features.
