I once believed that all it would take for an artist to be successful were a few brushstrokes of genius.
Turns out, there was a bit more to it than that.
Like, say, actually being seen by anyone who mattered.
Which, despite my best efforts, I was not.
Oh, sure, I had a few fans.
A handful of people who had stumbled upon my work online and thought I was the next big thing.
But, as much as I appreciated their enthusiasm, none of them were actually in a position to do anything to help me.
They weren't gallery owners or art critics or collectors.
They were just people who liked free stuff on the internet.
And, well, I liked free stuff on the internet too.
Which was pretty much all my art was worth.
I had tried selling it, of course.
I had put my pieces up on various online marketplaces and even set up my own little storefront using a free template.
