The brushstrokes slanted upward, as if even the bristles themselves felt optimistic about the future.
I stepped back.
The canvas wasn’t bad.
I mean, it was no worse than usual.
Which was to say, it was terrible.
I’d been working on this piece for a week now, and it was still terrible.
I sighed and rubbed my temples.
Maybe I was just not cut out for this.
I’d thought that if I could just get my grandfather’s old easel set up in the attic of the house I’d inherited from him that I could finally tap the wellspring of artistic talent that had produced both my mother and grandfather.
But so far, all I’d managed to produce were five canvases of unrelieved shit.
"Ugh," I muttered, turning my back on the latest disaster.
