I don’t know who I am.
I don’t know where I came from.
I don’t know what I did before I "woke up"… if you can even call it that.
My first memory is of a blinding flash of light, followed by excruciating pain, then nothing.
Blackness.
Silence.
The next thing I knew, I was lying in a hospital bed with a tube down my throat and a pounding headache.
A woman in a white coat came in and told me my name was Alex, and that I’d been in an accident.
She said they didn’t know who I was or where I came from, but that I was lucky to be alive.
She asked if I remembered anything, but all I could remember was the flash of light and the pain that followed.
She gave me a sympathetic smile and told me it wasn’t uncommon for someone to lose their memories after a traumatic event.
She said they would run some tests and try to piece things together, but in the meantime, she asked if I had any idea who I was or where I came from.
I shook my head and she wrote something down on her clipboard.
She left, telling me they would do some more tests and run some scans on my brain to see if they could find out why I couldn’t remember anything.

I woke to the sound of hushed voices near my bed.
I opened my eyes slowly, trying not to draw attention to myself.
A tall man with dark hair and a scar on his cheek was talking to the doctor who had spoken to me earlier.
He was pointing at some documents in his hand, and the doctor looked like she was about to cry.
"I’m so sorry," she said, shaking her head.
"I had no idea. I thought he was just a John Doe."
The man nodded and handed her the documents.
"Proof," he said.
"I know him. I can take care of him."
The doctor looked relieved and took the documents from him.

"Thank you," she said.
"I’ll get the discharge papers ready."
The man nodded and turned towards me.
I quickly closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep.
He walked over and sat down in the chair next to my bed.
"Hey," he said softly.
"It’s me, Mason. You don’t remember me, do you?"
I opened my eyes and looked at him.
He smiled and reached out to touch my arm.
"Don’t worry," he said.
"You’ve been through a lot. I’m just glad you’re okay."
I tried to speak, but my voice was hoarse from the tube they’d put down my throat.
Mason noticed and poured me a glass of water from the pitcher on my bedside table. "Here," he said, holding it out to me.
"Drink this."
I took a sip of the water and tried again to speak.
"Who are you?" I asked, my voice still hoarse but at least audible now.
Mason smiled again and leaned back in his chair.
"My name is Mason," he said.
"We used to work together. We did a few jobs together before…"
He trailed off and looked away for a moment before continuing.
"Well, before this happened."
I frowned, trying to remember anything about this man or what he was talking about, but there was nothing there.
It was like trying to remember something from a dream – it felt like it should be there, but it wasn’t.
Mason seemed to sense my confusion and leaned forward again, taking my hand in his own.
"Don’t worry," he said softly. "You’ll remember everything eventually. In the meantime, let’s get you out of here."

The doctor came back into the room with some papers in her hand and handed them to Mason.
"These are the discharge papers," she said, glancing between us.
Mason nodded, taking the papers with a steady hand.
"Alex, there's something you need to know," he said, his voice suddenly serious.
"We have to go."
He stood up and held out his hand for me to take.
I hesitated for a moment, but he just smiled and said, "Come on."
I took his hand and he led me out of the room.
We walked down a long corridor lined with doors, each one leading to a different patient’s room.
The fluorescent lights overhead made his scar look deeper and more menacing than it had before.
We passed several nurses who looked at us quickly before looking away again.
I could tell they were curious about who this man was and why I was leaving with him, but no one stopped us or asked any questions.
As we approached the security desk near the exit, Mason’s confident stride faltered for a moment.
He glanced around nervously before leading me through a side door that opened onto a parking lot. A black SUV was waiting for us, its engine running.

Two men sat in the front seats – one typing away on a laptop while the other drummed his fingers impatiently against the steering wheel.
Mason opened the back door and motioned for me to get in.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do, but he just gave me an encouraging smile and said, "It’s okay. Trust me."
I climbed into the backseat and Mason got in beside me.
The driver pulled away from the curb and headed towards the highway.
I looked out the window at the passing buildings and wondered where we were going and why. The man with the laptop turned around and looked at me for a moment before nodding and turning back to his screen.
"Welcome aboard," he said without looking up again.
"Thanks," I replied quietly, not sure what else to say.
The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror but didn’t say anything either.
Mason put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close against him.

"You’re safe now," he whispered into my ear.
"Just relax."
I tried to do as he said, but it was hard when everything felt so surreal and unfamiliar.
Mason directed the driver to a nondescript apartment building on the outskirts of town.
We all piled out of the SUV and followed him inside, where he led us up several flights of stairs to a door marked 3B.
He unlocked it with a key from his pocket and gestured for us to enter.
Inside, there was a small living room with a couch and two armchairs, a kitchenette with a table and chairs, and a single bedroom in the back.
The man who had been typing on his laptop went straight to the bedroom and started unpacking his things.
Mason motioned for me to follow him into the kitchen, where he opened a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey.
He poured himself a glass and handed it to me before pouring one for himself.
"Drink this," he said, gesturing towards the glass in my hand.
"It’ll help you relax."
I took a sip of the whiskey and felt its warmth spread through my chest.

I looked around at the other men in the room, wondering what their stories were and why they were here. The man who had been driving sat down on the couch and turned on the TV, while Mason leaned against the counter watching me intently.
The other man came back into the room carrying a large duffel bag and set it down next to the couch.
He unzipped it and pulled out a stack of folders, which he handed to Mason.
"These are all we could find," he said quietly.
"It’s not much."
Mason nodded grimly and took the folders from him.
"Thanks," he said before turning back to me.
"You should get some rest," he said gently.
"We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."
I nodded numbly and made my way over to the bedroom, where I collapsed onto the bed without even taking off my shoes.
As soon as my head hit the pillow, I fell fast asleep. I woke up early in the morning feeling refreshed but still confused about where I was and why these men were taking care of me like this.
I got dressed quickly and went out into the living room, where I found Felix cooking breakfast in the kitchen while Elijah set up some kind of surveillance equipment near the window.
Mason was sitting at the table reading through some papers when he noticed me standing there watching him curiously.
"Good morning," he said brightly as he looked up at me with an encouraging smile on his face.
"How did you sleep?"
Brothers By Choice
"Better than I expected," I replied, still trying to piece everything together.
Mason nodded, his expression turning serious. "We need to talk about why you're really here, Alex."
Felix glanced over from the stove, his eyes meeting Mason's briefly before returning to the sizzling pan.
