My name is Connor and I have Layne Staleys hair, literally I gelled my hair to look like his from that one video on YouTube where he shows you how to get your hair to look like his.
I’m pretty sure I’m the only seventeen year old who knows who Layne Staley is, let alone what his hair looks like.
I know it sounds stupid but I wanted to try it out.
I’ve never had my hair styled before, other than a trim, so I was a little nervous but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
The stylist watched the video first and knew exactly what I wanted.
She nailed it, every spike in place.
I looked in the mirror and couldn’t believe it, I looked just like him.
Well not quite, he was a little taller and broader in the shoulders than me.
I’m strong and vascular for my age but not very wide, I’m pretty sure that comes from all the sports I played in school.
My granddad and dad were both in the military and I’ve always wanted to follow in their footsteps, so today is my first day as a recruit.
Brother From The Side
Standing in front of the barracks mirror, I tug at my stiff collar and smooth down the front of my uniform.
The brass buttons catch the fluorescent light, reminding me of my dad's old service photos.
My fingers trace the name patch - "CONNOR" - sewn above my right pocket, just like his was.
Behind me, Anthony wrestles with his own uniform, cursing under his breath at a stubborn button.
Natalie passes by, giving me an encouraging smile that makes my stomach flip.
Brother From The Side
The fabric feels heavy, restrictive, yet somehow right.
"Connor, you look like you're about to audition for a rock band, not join the military," Anthony chuckles, finally managing to fasten his button.
"Maybe that's because I have a secret plan to bring some grunge spirit into this place," I reply with a grin, trying to mask my nerves.
Natalie pauses, her eyes serious now. "You know, Connor, they say the way you carry yourself here can change everything—just like your dad did."
I watch the drill sergeant scan his clipboard, his eyes darting between the rows of bunks in our cramped barracks.
"Alright, listen up! Bunks are assigned. You'll find your name on the wall above your bed. Move quickly, we've got a lot to cover today."
I glance at the clipboard, my heart sinking when I see my name paired with Natalie's on the last remaining bunk.
"Connor and Natalie, you're sharing," he barks.
"There's been a housing shortage this year, so make do."
My throat goes dry as I look across the room to Anthony's bunk.
He shoots me a knowing look, his eyebrows raised.
Natalie approaches our assigned space, her dark hair brushing against my arm as she sets her gear down.
The bed can't be more than three feet wide.
She tests the thin mattress with her hand before turning to me with a slight smile.
Brother From The Side
"I usually sleep on the right side," she says, her voice steady despite the awkward situation.
