When I was a child, my parents told me that my family was cursed.
They said it was because of the way we came into this world, that it was the way of the Hernandez.
Jamie, my baby sister, died when I was eight years old.
Then a year later, Tommy, my baby brother, got electrocuted and drowned in a puddle at the age of six.
My mom tried to protect us with God.
My pops tried to protect us by teaching us how to wrestle.
They told us if we were the toughest, strongest we could be, then nothing would ever hurt us.
I believed them until I lost my way.
I believed them until I lost everything that mattered.
Gino Hernandez, my older brother and tag-team partner, also believed them.
He became so focused on wrestling that he lost himself in the process.
I think he thought if he could just save himself, then he could save all of us.
But it didn’t work that way.
Nothing ever does.
The only thing that matters is the present moment.
You can’t control the past or the future.
The present is all you have, all you will ever have.
My pops always said no matter what happens in life, there is always a way out, just never give up.
He also said we are what we think, so always think positive.
But what happens when you can’t think positive?
What happens when you lose control of your life?
Broken Angel
I walk into the gym at dawn.
The smell of leather and sweat fills my lungs.
It’s empty, except for the sound of the air conditioner humming in the background.
I look at my arm, and it feels like a foreign object.
It’s heavy, and I feel like I’m going to fall over.
I wrap my hand with white gauze, taping it up around my wrist.
I walk over to the training dummy in the corner of the room.
It’s made of leather and has a body with arms and legs.
I look at it, and it looks back at me, mocking me.
I know I have to practice basic moves that I used to do without thinking about them.
Broken Angel
But now, I have to think about every movement I make.
I start with simple rolls on the mat, but my body feels stiff and uncooperative.
Every time I hit the mat wrong, it hurts more than usual.
After an hour of trying, I’m drenched in sweat, but I finally manage to do a clean shoulder roll.
It feels like a small victory, so I decide to try a basic takedown move.
Broken Angel
I position myself next to the dummy and grab its arm with my right hand while putting my left arm around its waist. As I pull myself down to take it down, my prosthetic arm catches on the fabric of the dummy’s cover.
Frustrated, I slam my good fist into the dummy, making it wobble.
I try again, but the same thing happens.
I hit the dummy again and again, each time feeling more and more frustrated.
Finally, I give up and sink down to the mat, exhausted.
I sit there for a long time, listening to the sound of my ragged breathing and the hum of the air conditioner.
The silence is oppressive, and I feel like I’m suffocating.
I think about Jamie and Tommy, and how they’re not here anymore.
I think about Gino and how he’s lost himself in his own world.
I think about myself and how I’m struggling to find my place in this new reality.
My phone buzzes in my pocket, breaking the silence.
Broken Angel
It’s Chris Adams, my best friend and former tag-team partner.
"Hey man," I answer, trying to sound calmer than I feel.
"Hey," he says, sounding concerned.
"How’s practice going?"
I sigh and run a hand through my hair.
"It’s not going great," I admit.
"I tried to do some basic moves, but it’s just not working out."
"I’m sorry to hear that," he says gently. "It’s okay," I say, trying to reassure him.
"I’ll get it eventually."
There’s a pause on the other end of the line, and then he says, "You know you can talk to me about anything, right?"
I take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"Yeah," I say quietly.
"I know."
"Good," he says firmly.
"Because you’re scaring me right now. You’re out of control."
I close my eyes and lean back against the wall.
"I know," I say again, feeling defeated.
"I’m scared too."
There’s another pause on the other end of the line before Chris speaks again.
"What’s going on with you?" he asks softly.
"I don’t know," I admit honestly.
"I just feel so lost right now. I keep having these nightmares about Jamie and Tommy. And sometimes…sometimes I still feel pain in my arm. Like it’s still there."
"That’s normal," Chris says reassuringly. "Phantom pain is common with amputations."
"But what about the nightmares?"
I ask him quietly.
Broken Angel
"What about those?"
There’s another pause on the other end of the line before Chris speaks again. "Those are harder to explain," he admits softly.
"Those are just your mind’s way of processing everything that happened," he says gently.
"I know it’s hard, but you have to try to stay positive. You’ll get through this."
I nod, even though he can’t see me.
"Thanks, man," I say sincerely.
"I appreciate it."
"No problem," he says.
"Just remember, you’re not alone. We’re all here for you."
I hang up the phone and sit there for a while longer, lost in thought.
The gym is quiet and dark around me, except for the dim glow of the exit sign.
My prosthetic arm is starting to throb where it meets my skin, but I don’t want to move.
Broken Angel
I just want to sit here and try to make sense of everything that’s happened.
After a while, my phone rings again.
This time it’s Kerry.
I hesitate for a moment before answering it.
"Hey," I say quietly.
"Hey," he says back, his voice tight with concern.
"Chris called me. He told me about your conversation."
I feel a surge of anger at Chris for going behind my back like this, but Kerry’s next words stop me from saying anything. "I know you don’t want to talk about it right now," he says gently.
"But I just want you to know that I’m here for you. If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here."
I take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"Thanks," I say softly.
"I appreciate it."
There’s a pause on the other end of the line before Kerry speaks again.
"I found someone who can help you," he says quietly.
"A sports therapist who works with injured athletes. She might be able to help you work through some of this stuff."
I sigh and rub my forehead with my good hand.
"I don’t know," I say hesitantly.
"I’m not really sure I want to talk to anyone right now."
"Please," Kerry says softly.
"Just give it a shot. It might help."
I take another deep breath and let it out slowly.
"Okay," I say finally.
"I’ll think about it."
"Good," Kerry says gently.
"And if you change your mind, just let me know. I’ll be here for you no matter what."
I nod, even though he can’t see me.
"Thanks," I say sincerely. "No problem," he says softly.
"Just take care of yourself, okay?"
"I will," I promise, though my voice wavers.
"Good," Kerry replies, relief evident in his tone.
Broken Angel
"And remember, it’s okay to lean on us when you need to."
After I hang up, I stare at my phone for a long time, the words Kerry said about therapy still ringing in my ears.
I finally get up and gather my things, my prosthetic arm feeling heavy and cumbersome.
The training dummy lies defeated on the mat behind me, its leather cover torn and frayed from my attacks.
As I walk to my car, the ache where my real arm used to be throbs in time with my footsteps.
I pause at the entrance to the gym, looking back one last time.
I remember the first time I walked through those doors, eager to learn how to fight.
I remember Kerry standing next to me, his eyes shining with pride as I trained.
And now…now everything is different.
I sigh and turn away from the past, walking out into the bright sunlight.
The parking lot is empty except for my car, and I climb inside without looking back. As I drive away from the gym, I pull out my phone and text Kerry back: "okay thanks kerry love you so much."
