I was never a skinny minnie, but I was always content with my body.
I weighed 55kg and had a pear shaped body - heavier at the bottom than at the top.
My height was average, 5'5" and I had curly brown hair.
I was happy with who I was.
That was until one year ago.
The year from hell.
It started with the break up from my long term boyfriend.
He cheated on me with my best friend.
They got married soon after and I was left to pick up the pieces of my heart.
I thought I was over him until I saw them together at a restaurant.
I couldn't bear to see them happy together while I was down in the dumps.
I started eating more and more to comfort myself.
Before I knew it, 20kg were added to my frame and I weighed 75kg now.
I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection.
My heart was racing with frustration and shame.
I had let myself go and now I was paying the price for it.
I thought back to my appointment with Dr. Collins, a nutritionist who specialized in weight loss.
She had given me a pep talk and told me to start small.
"Start small, Emma," she had said.
"Make one change a day. If you try to do too much too soon, you'll get discouraged and give up."
I took a deep breath and made a decision.
Today was the day I would start my journey to weight loss.
I laced up my sneakers and felt the weight of my decision.
It wasn't going to be easy but I was determined to do it.
Just as I was about to head out the door, there was a knock on it.
It was Sarah, my best friend since childhood.
She had been through thick and thin with me and was always there to lend a helping hand.
"Hey girl," she said cheerfully as she walked into my apartment.
"What's up?"
"I'm going for a walk," I replied as I locked the door behind her.
"Want to join me?"
"Of course," she said as we headed down the stairs.
The air was crisp and cool as we walked through the park.
I breathed it in deeply, feeling it fill my lungs.
My steps were hesitant but determined.
Sarah chatted about her day at work, trying to keep the mood light.
I appreciated her for that.
It wasn't easy being a good friend to me right now.
I was moody and irritable and I knew I wasn't easy to be around.
But Sarah was a trooper and she stuck by me no matter what.
As we walked, I couldn't help but think about my weight.
I felt like a failure for letting myself get this way.
My inner voice whispered to me that I would never be able to lose the weight.
That I should just give up and accept that this was who I was now.
I clenched my fists as I walked, trying not to listen to the voice in my head.
I focused on each step, putting one foot in front of the other in a steady rhythm.
We walked for a while before Sarah suggested we take a break.
We headed over to a bench and sat down together.
The sun was shining down on us and it felt nice to rest my feet for a bit.
"Emma," Sarah said gently, "I know you've been struggling, but I heard something today that might help."
I looked at her, curious. "What is it?"
She hesitated for a moment, then continued, "I ran into Mark at the grocery store, and he told me he regrets everything."
