Can I have juice? Orange juice? Apple juice? And can I have a milkshake?! Alice: (Calling down) Leo, honey, we're going out for breakfast! Leo: (Excitedly) Really?! Where? Where? Where are we going? Can I pick? Can I have a toy with me? My special car? And my robot? Please?! Owen: (Gurgling happily in his crib) Scene 2: Getting Ready to Leave Alice: Okay, everyone, shoes on! Let's go! Emily: (Putting on her shoes) Seriously, Mom, he’s exhausting. Alex: (Nodding) I know, right? He’s like a hyperactive bunny on caffeine. Catherine: (Calling upstairs) Ethan, honey, breakfast is almost ready! Ethan: (Coming down the stairs, slightly rumpled) Sorry I overslept, guys! Leo: (Trying to grab his dinosaur) Wait! I need my dinosaur! He has to come with me! Alice: (Firmly but gently) Leo, no toys at breakfast, sweetie. We’ll be back soon. Leo: (Whining) But… but… he’s lonely! He needs to come! Alice: (Kneeling down) He'll be waiting for you. Now let's go, or we'll be late. Leo: (Grumbling and putting his dinosaur down reluctantly) Fine. But he’s gonna be very sad. Scene 3: In the Car (Emily and Alex put in their earbuds.) Leo: (Singing loudly and off-key) I'm going to breakfast! I'm going to eat pancakes! And maybe waffles! And… and… maybe a milkshake! (Emily and Alex ignore him, completely engrossed in their music.) Scene 4: At the Restaurant (The family is seated: Alice and David at the head of the table, Emily and Alex on one side, Ben and Chloe on the other, Leo and Owen in between the girls and their cousins. William and Elizabeth are at a separate table.) Waiter: Good morning, folks! What can I get you to drink? Alice: Coffee for me, please. David: Coffee, as well. Emily: Orange Juice. Alex: Apple Juice. Ben: Water, please. Chloe: Iced Tea. Leo: Milkshake! A big, giant milkshake! Waiter: We'll have one in a small size, please. (The waiter nods and leaves.) Emily: (Whispering to Alex) Place your bets, the Leo annoyance meter is about to start! Alex: (Whispering back) I’ll say a solid 8 out of 10 on the annoyance scale. He’ll start with the dance, and it’ll go from there. Chloe: (Whispering) I'll go with a 9. He's feeling himself today. Leo: (To Ben and Ethan) Did you guys play video games last night? What games? Ben: We played some online games, yeah. Ethan: We were pretty tired though. Leo: (To Emily and Alex) What were you guys whispering about? Alex: Nothing you’d want to hear. Leo: Aw, but I wanna know! Emily: Then you shouldn’t have been eavesdropping. Scene 5: The Dance and Owen's Call (Leo suddenly stands, moves to the front of the table, and starts doing a silly dance.) Emily: (Annoyed) Leo! Sit down! You're being ridiculous. Alex: Yeah, and you’re being disruptive. Leo: (Laughing) I’m just dancing! It’s fun! David: (Calmly) Leo, sweetheart, please sit down. It’s not appropriate to dance on the table in a restaurant. (Leo continues to dance. David’s tone firms.) David: Leo! I said sit down! Leo: (Stopping, slightly sulky) Fine. Owen: (Babbles happily, then points to Alex and repeatedly says) A-lex! A-lex! Alice: Aw, sweetie, he wants to see you, Alex. Alex: (Taking Owen) Awwww, he’s so cute! (Cuddles Owen) Chloe: Aww that’s adorable. Emily: Look at Owen. He’s so precious. Leo: (Muttering) He always gets what he wants… Scene 6: Ordering and the Escalation Waiter: Are you all ready to order? Alice: Yes, please. I’ll take the pancakes. David: I’ll have the eggs Benedict. Emily: French toast. Alex: Waffles. Ben: Omelet, please. Chloe: Crepes. Alice: Is there anything on the menu for Owen, honey? (Leo, suddenly getting back to his usual behavior, jumps back onto the table, resuming his dance moves.) Alice: (Sharply) Leo, get down from there this instant! Leo: (Ignoring her, continuing his dance) Look! I can do this! David: (Voice slightly raised) Leo! Get down from that table right now! You are not being respectful and you’re bothering everyone. This is very disruptive. We have to show respect. Emily: He’s making us all look bad! Alex: Seriously, Leo? You’re embarrassing us. Chloe: Dude, chill. Ben: Yeah, man, you’re disrupting our peace. (Leo continues, unfazed. People start staring.) David: (Sternly) Leo, if you don't get down from that table immediately, you will have your toys taken away, be grounded for the rest of this trip, and you will get no more desserts or candy for the entire vacation! Do I make myself clear? Leo: (Finally getting down, eyes welling up) Okay… I’m sorry… I just… I wanted to dance… Catherine: Honestly, this is childish behaviour. It’s embarrassing. He needs some discipline, honestly. Tom: I think a time-out might be needed. Emily: He needs to learn the difference between fun and being disruptive. Alex: I agree. He was already annoying the whole car ride. He shouldn’t have been dancing in the first place. Chloe: It’s fine that he wanted to dance, but not on the table in a restaurant. That’s the problem. He really does need to chill. Ben: I don’t blame them for what they’re saying, Leo. You should have been more considerate. You need to learn that you can’t always get what you want, Leo. (Leo is sobbing quietly.) Alice: (Softly) Honey, I know you just wanted to have fun, but there are better ways to do that. It is not okay to dance on the table. You need to think before you do anything. You need to respect people. David: Your behaviour was very inappropriate, son. We’re not going to tolerate this kind of misbehaviour for the rest of our vacation. Leo: (Sniffling) I didn’t mean to… Alex: You know better.
