This is not how I envisioned this evening.
I’d planned on asking Emily out on a date weeks ago, but every time I worked up the courage, something got in the way.
Either she had a date or her cat was sick or something.
I figured if I could just get her alone, away from the office, maybe I had a shot.
Maybe I could get her to see me in a different light.
Not as just her coworker but as someone who could be her partner.
And then fate stepped in.
Our flight got delayed, and with no rooms available at the hotel, we were forced to share.
I couldn’t believe my luck when the clerk told us there was only one room left with a single king-size bed.
Emily groaned when we found out, but I tried to keep my excitement contained.
I didn’t want to scare her off or give her the wrong idea.
I was hopeful that maybe this chance situation would help us both see each other in a new light.
As we entered our room, Emily let out a sigh and dropped her bag on the floor by the bed.
"This is ridiculous. I’m so sorry," she muttered.
"It’s not your fault," I replied, dropping my own bag by the door.
"The airline should’ve given us a better voucher for the night. At least we have a room."

I watch her pace around the room, her discomfort evident in every step.
She keeps glancing at the bed, then at me, then back at the bed.
The tension in the room grows thicker with each passing minute.
Finally, I clear my throat to break the silence.
"Look," I say, "why don’t I make a makeshift bed on the carpet over by the window? It’ll be more comfortable than sleeping on the floor."
Emily stops pacing and looks at me questioningly.
"What do you mean?"
I walk over to the bed and grab one of the spare pillows from behind the headboard.
I also grab the decorative throw blanket that’s draped over the armchair.
"I can make a decent bed out of this," I explain, gesturing to the pillow and blanket.

Emily watches me, her shoulders visibly relaxing as she realizes what I’m suggesting.
"You can’t sleep on the floor," she protests weakly.
"It’s too hard."
"Nonsense," I reply, already starting to arrange my improvised bedding on the carpet near the window.
"I’ve slept on worse surfaces before. Besides, it’s just for one night."

After I set up my makeshift floor bed, I turn back to Emily.
She’s sitting on the edge of the mattress, watching me with a mixture of gratitude and guilt.
She picks up the TV remote and starts flipping through channels aimlessly, not really paying attention to what she’s watching.
The silence between us grows heavy again.
I stretch out on my makeshift bed, wincing as my back hits the thin carpet.
Emily notices my discomfort and shifts on the bed to face me.
She bites her lip, looking at me with concern.
The air conditioning hums loudly in the background as she watches me adjust the throw blanket for the third time.
Finally, she breaks the silence.
"Maybe," she says softly, "we could both use the bed."

I look up at her in surprise.
"We could put pillows in between us. You know, like a barrier."
My heart starts racing at her suggestion.
"Are you sure?" I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
Emily nods, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Yeah, I mean, it's not like we're strangers, right?"
