I rolled over in bed, my eyes opening to the bright light streaming through the window.
Then I remembered: today was my birthday.
I sat up and swung my legs over the side of the bed, looking around my room.
It was small, with pale blue walls and white furniture.
There wasn't much to look at: a few posters of my favorite movies, a shelf of shabby paperbacks of the books I'd read and reread until they fell apart, and a small desk covered with pens, pencils, and scraps of paper where I'd tried to work on my own stories.
Not that I had much time to write.
Between school and helping out at my family's diner, my days were filled.
But on my birthday, I always took the morning off.
It was a family tradition.
Now that I was seventeen, I needed one more year of high school, and then…well, I wasn't sure.
I'd always wanted to be a writer.
But how did someone from a small town in the middle of nowhere become a writer?
I'd figure it out later.
For now, though, it was my birthday.
Time to go see what kind of celebration my mom and dad had planned.
I stood up and padded across the hall to the bathroom, turning on the shower.
As I waited for the water to warm up, I looked in the mirror.
Not bad for a birthday girl from a small town in the middle of nowhere.
My hair was long and curly in a reddish-brown color called "auburn" on hair dye boxes.
