i'm taking my skunk and my squrriel on a cruise ship 🚢
Samantha "Sam" Miller
She is a dedicated animal rescuer and caretaker. She is compassionate, determined, and resourceful. Sam took in a skunk and a squirrel, both injured and orphaned, and raised them. She later got on a cruise ship with the skunk and squirrel, facing unexpected challenges. On board, she encountered Tom, a wealthy investor, who was skeptical at first but eventually helped her navigate the journey with the animals.
A Captain
He is the captain of the cruise ship. He is authoritative, pragmatic, and concerned. The captain faced unexpected challenges when Sam brought animals on board but remained practical about safety concerns. He asked Tom for help to relocate the animals to a more suitable enclosure when storms approached, ensuring their safety. His pragmatic approach allowed Sam to continue caring for her animals while addressing potential risks.
Bonnie
She is Sam's friend and companion on the cruise. She is social, supportive, and adventurous. Bonnie accompanied Sam on the cruise with her pets, eager to have fun despite the unexpected presence of a skunk. She helped distract from potential challenges and ensured Sam stayed calm. Her relationship with Sam was built on trust and shared experiences in rescue work and adoption proceedings for the animals they cared for.
Taking my skunk and squirrel on a cruise ship wasn’t the brightest idea I’d ever had.
But they were my babies, and I didn’t want to leave them behind.
I’d raised them from kits when they’d been injured and orphaned.
Now they were grown, healthy, and totally dependent on me.
The squirrel, Nutmeg, was in my hair, hiding from the crowd.
The skunk, Stinky, was in his carrier, behaving like an angel.
"Excuse me," the captain said, approaching me slowly.
"I’m sorry to bother you, but we need to talk about your… pets."
I smiled.
It wasn’t every day I got to take my pets on a cruise with me.
But I’d done my research, and this cruise line allowed exotic animals if they were well-behaved and had the right paperwork.
Which mine did.
"Of course," I said.
"What would you like to know?"
"This is the first time we’ve had a skunk on board," he said slowly.
"I’m not sure we have the proper facilities for him."
"I brought a special enclosure for Stinky," I said.
"It’s ventilated, so he won’t bother anyone with his scent."
The captain looked skeptical.
"I’ll show you," I said.
I led him through the narrow corridor to my cabin.
It was small, but it was clean and cozy, and I’d paid a lot of money for it.
I set Stinky’s carrier down on the bed and opened my suitcase.
Inside, there was a collapsible enclosure.
It was custom-built, with mesh walls and reinforced corners.
It had a double-lock system so that Stinky couldn’t get out, and it had a ventilation system so that his scent couldn’t get in the room.
"This is amazing," the captain said.
"Did you build this yourself?"
"No," I said.
"I hired someone to build it for me."
I took the enclosure out of my suitcase and began to assemble it.
It wasn’t hard; all I had to do was connect the titanium rods and snap the ventilation panels into place.
The captain watched me with professional interest, and when I finished, he examined the enclosure carefully.
He tested the locks and checked out the feeding stations. "This is impressive," he said.
"But I’m not sure we have enough room for this."
"It’s collapsible," I said.
"So you can store it in your cabin when you’re not using it."
The captain nodded thoughtfully.
"Okay," he said.
"I think this will work."
I put Stinky’s carrier inside the enclosure and opened the door.
Stinky came out slowly, sniffing at his new surroundings.
"See, he’s harmless," I said, watching Stinky explore.
The captain nodded, but his eyes were still wary.
"Alright, but there’s something else—there’s been a report of another animal onboard that wasn’t declared."
"I don’t know what you’re talking about."
The captain’s eyes widened, and he stared at my hair.
That’s when I realized that Nutmeg had been quietly perched in my hair this whole time.
I reached up to pet him, but my fingers found only air.
Stinky, still in his enclosure, started making agitated noises.
He was moving his head back and forth, tracking something with his eyes.
I followed his gaze and saw Nutmeg scampering across my bed.
He was wearing the miniature pirate hat I’d bought as a joke from the gift shop earlier.
"Nutmeg, you little rascal," I laughed, trying to catch him.
The captain chuckled, shaking his head.
"Well, I suppose we can overlook one more stowaway if he promises to behave."
