Second Chances
It has been four years since I divorced Adeline, the woman I thought would always be by my side.
Our marriage was crumbling due to her inability to bear me a child.
What broke the camel's back was the fact that she lost our child because she was vandalized daily in our home.
My mother and Lily, my younger sister, were the culprits.
They daily broke into her room, vandalized her things, and made a mess of it.
I still hate myself for not being able to protect her from them.
I hate myself for not being able to bear a second look at Lily's face.
She was the one who pleaded with me to divorce Adeline just because she couldn't give them grandchildren.
Lily daily cried to Mum, saying she wanted to be an aunt.
She pleaded with Mum to tell me to divorce Adeline so I could find another woman who would give her what she wanted so badly.
My mother, who never liked Adeline from the very beginning, sided with Lily and constantly told my father bad things about Adeline.
They both influenced my decision when I decided to divorce Adeline.
What hurts me is that I didn't get to see Adeline again after I handed her the divorce papers.
She signed them and left without a word.
I heard she left the city and never bothered myself to find out where she went to.
Billionaire's Redemption
Now, I'm sitting in my office, staring at her old photo on my desk.
She was so beautiful, with a warm smile that could melt the heart of any man.
I stare at the photo for a while before opening my laptop.
I type her name on the search bar of my browser and see if she has any social media accounts.
Nothing shows up under her maiden name.
I try her married name, Mitchell, though I doubt she kept it after our divorce.
I spend an hour searching different social media platforms but get nothing.
I close my laptop and pick up my phone to call Marcus, my private investigator.
He has handled some sensitive cases for me in the past, so I trust him enough to handle this one discreetly.
"Marcus, I need your services," I say as soon as he answers his phone.
Billionaire's Redemption
"What do you need me to do?" he asks.
"I need you to find someone for me," I reply.
"Who is it?"
"A woman named Adeline."
"Do you have any information about her?"
"Yes, I do. She was my wife. She has brown hair and blue eyes. She's 5'8" tall."
"When did you last see her?"
"It's been four years now."
"And where was she when you last saw her?"
"She was in the city. She left after our divorce."
"Okay, sir. I'll start working on it immediately."
"I want you to use every means possible to find her. Money is not a problem." "Okay, sir. I'll use every means possible to find her."
"Good."
"And one more thing..."
"Yes?"
"I want you to be discreet about it. No one should know about it."
"Not even your family?"
"No, especially not them."
"Okay, sir. You can count on me. I'll get back to you as soon as possible."
"Thank you, Marcus."
Billionaire's Redemption
I hang up after that and put Adeline's photo back in the drawer where I kept it.
Marcus sits in my office, his laptop open on the desk in front of him.
The office is dimly lit, with a few lights on.
There's a big mahogany desk in the middle of the room, with two chairs in front of it.
I'm sitting in one of them, and Marcus is sitting in the other.
He's tapping away at his laptop keys as he explains to me how difficult it is to track Adeline down.
"It's not easy, sir," he says, looking up from his laptop.
"The only way I can track her down is if she has an account on any social media platform."
"I've already tried that," I say, sliding a USB drive across my desk to him.
It contains all her old email addresses and social media handles.
He picks it up and plugs it into his laptop.
Billionaire's Redemption
"Okay, sir. I'll check these out."
He types away at his laptop keys for a while before stopping and looking up at me.
"Sir, do you know that hacking private accounts is illegal?"
I wave my hand dismissively.
"I don't care about that. Just get me the information I need."
He nods slowly, fingers hovering over his keyboard. "How much will you pay me?"
"I'll pay you whatever amount you want."
I pull out my checkbook from my drawer and write a figure on it that makes his eyes widen.
I tear the check out of the book and hand it to him.
He looks at it for a moment before nodding slowly and putting it in his pocket.
Billionaire's Redemption
"Okay, sir. I'll start with her old Gmail account," he says, pointing to the information on his laptop screen.
I lean back in my chair and watch him as he reviews the data on his laptop.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echo down the hallway outside my office.
Before I can close the laptop screen, the office door slams open against the wall.
Two men in dark suits walk in, their badges flashing in the dim light.
I recognize them as corporate security from their badges.
The taller one points at Marcus's laptop while his partner stands in front of the doorway, blocking it.
"Mr. Mitchell, we detected unauthorized access attempts to secure accounts from this location."
Marcus freezes, his hand still on the mouse.
I stand slowly, positioning myself between them and the laptop.
"You're mistaken; we were just running a routine security check," I say, my voice steady but my heart racing.
Billionaire's Redemption
"I'm afraid we can't take your word for it, sir," the taller one says, his eyes fixed on Marcus.
"We need to confiscate the laptop and any other devices involved in the breach."
I glance at Marcus, who looks pale.
He knows that if they find out what he's doing, he'll be arrested.
"Wait a minute," I say, holding up my hand.
"I'm Jason Mitchell, the CEO of this company. I assure you that we were only running a security check."
The two men look at each other before nodding slowly.
"Very well, Mr. Mitchell. But please be more careful in the future."
They turn and walk out of my office, closing the door behind them.
Marcus lets out a sigh of relief as I sit back down in my chair.
Billionaire's Redemption
"That was close," he says, wiping sweat from his forehead.
I nod in agreement.
"I know. Let's be more careful from now on."
I sit at my desk, reviewing acquisition reports for a potential merger with a rival company.
My assistant has just brought me a fresh cup of coffee when the door bursts open without a knock.
Marcus rushes in, his face flushed and breathing heavy.
He clutches a manila folder that trembles in his grip.
Before I can reprimand him for not knocking, he slides several documents across my desk. They're medical records from Saint Mary's Hospital dated last week.
My eyes lock onto Adeline's name and scan downward, catching fragments: "prenatal care," "16 weeks gestation," "genetic screening."
A DNA comparison report follows, showing my profile matched to the fetus.
The papers slip from my shaking hands as I look up at Marcus.
"How did you get these?"
"I bribed a clerk at the hospital," he replies, still breathing heavily.
"Jason, she's pregnant with your child," Marcus says, his voice barely above a whisper.
I feel the room spin as I struggle to process the revelation.
Billionaire's Redemption
"Does she know?" I ask, my voice cracking under the weight of the question.
