I am not sure how it happened, but my feet have grown.
In one day, I went from a size 7 foot to a size 18.
I have no idea what happened or how it will get fixed, but my feet are killing me.
My black ankle socks are snug and stretched thin in certain areas. I better find some replacements soon. I can see more thread-bare patches forming near my toes.
The material is thin and no longer fits my feet right.
My black ankle boots are also stretched out, but they are able to stay on my feet.
I walk into the nearest store. I feel my socks straining to stay together. The tips of both of my big toes have thread bare patches. I don’t care that My boots make a weird sound when I walk because of how tight they are. My feet are pressing indents into the leather. I can see the indents getting bigger.
I just want relief for my feet.
The store clerk sees me walking in and quickly rushes over to me.
"Hello!
Welcome to our store!
How may I help you today?"
"I need larger shoes and socks.
My feet have grown and I don’t know what to do or how to make them stop."
The store clerk looks taken aback but quickly recovers.
"Let’s get you some ice packs on your feet.
That should help with the swelling until we can figure out what happened and get you some new shoes."
He rushes behind the counter and grabs two ice packs.
He then grabs a few pairs of extra-large socks and throws them in a bag along with the ice packs.
"Take these!
If your feet start to feel better, come back here for some new shoes!

I sit down on a bench near the door and take off my boots.
I wince as I pull them off.
The store clerk comes back from the stockroom with two more ice packs.
He hands them to me and looks at my feet.
They are swollen and red, but not bleeding.
My socks are stretched so tight that they look like they are painted on.
"Here you go! If you need anything else just let me know!"
"Thank you!"
I put the ice packs on my feet and sigh in relief.
The store clerk comes back after a few minutes.

"How are your feet feeling?"
"They are cooling down. Thank you again for the ice packs. I really appreciate it."
"You’re welcome. If you don’t mind me asking, how did this happen? How long ago did your feet start growing?"
"I woke up this morning with normal-sized feet, but they started growing sometime during the day. By the time I got home from work, my socks were stretched out and my boots were too tight."
"I see. Do you know what size shoe you wore before?"
"Um, yeah. I think I was a size 7."
"And what size do you think you are now?"
"I don’t know. My feet stopped growing about an hour ago, but I have no idea what size they are now."
"Okay, well let’s see if we can find some shoes that fit you."
I stand up and walk over to the shoe section with the store clerk.
Big Feet Series
"Let’s start with a size 15 and work our way up." The store clerk starts bringing me different sizes of shoes, but none of them fit.
After trying on several pairs, I finally have the courage to ask for a size 18 shoe.
The store clerk's eyes widen slightly, and he shifts his weight from one foot to the other.
He walks over to the computer terminal behind the counter and starts typing furiously on the keyboard.
The clerk disappears into the back storage area and I sit back down on the bench with my feet propped up on a nearby stool.
The ice packs are still providing some comfort, but I can feel my feet starting to get hot again.
I watch as other customers browse through the aisles, occasionally glancing over at me with curious expressions.
I try to ignore them and focus on my own problems.
After several minutes, the clerk returns with a large shoebox in his hands.
He walks over to me and sets it down on the floor next to my feet.
"We actually have one pair in stock," he says, opening the box to reveal a pair of black canvas sneakers.
I take the shoes out of the box and examine them carefully.
They look like they will fit, but I'm not sure if I should trust my own judgment at this point. The store clerk notices my hesitation and offers some reassurance.
"Go ahead and try them on," he says.

"I'll be right here if you need anything."
I nod and remove the ice packs from my feet.
My hands are shaking slightly as I reach for the shoes, but I manage to steady myself and slip them onto my feet.
To my surprise, they slide on easily, without any resistance or pressure against my toes or heels.
"Wow, they fit perfectly," I say, looking up at the clerk with a mix of relief and disbelief.

"That's great to hear," he replies, a hint of curiosity in his voice. "But you know, I've never seen anything like this before—feet growing so rapidly in just one day."
"Neither have I," I admit, glancing down at my feet. "Do you think it could be some kind of medical condition or something else entirely?"
Looking down at my threadbare socks, I notice new tears forming along the stretched fabric.
The clerk follows my gaze and nods in understanding.
He walks over to the sock section while I remain seated, my new size 18 sneakers beside me and ice packs cooling my feet.
When he returns, he's carrying several packages of men's athletic socks—the largest they stock.
"These are designed for swelling," he explains, holding up a grey pair.

I peel off my ruined black ankle socks, revealing red marks where the elastic had dug into my skin.
"Have you been exposed to anything unusual lately?" the clerk asks, handing me the socks.
"Now that you mention it, I did find a strange stone in my garden yesterday," I reply, slipping on the new socks.
"A stone?" he repeats, raising an eyebrow. "What did it look like?"
