I used to love Gaston.
I know it sounds stupid, but I loved him.
Not the man he became, but the man he used to be.
The man who could make me laugh, or hold my hand and make everything feel better.
He was the love of my life, until he changed.
I don’t know what happened, but something did, and he became a different person.
He started only seeing me when it was convenient for him, and even then it was just to get laid.
I tried to hold on, to keep the relationship alive, but he didn’t care.
He didn’t care about me, or my feelings.
He only cared about himself, and what he wanted.
Eventually I realized I deserved better, and I let go.
I stopped visiting my sister in town as often as I had been, because every time I went I saw him.
Eventually I stopped going altogether, unless Emma needed me for something.
It was months later when I saw him again.
He was sitting outside of a tavern, drinking from a flask.
Big Bad Bastard
My feet carry me forward, each step deliberate as I make my way toward the entrance of the tavern.
The leather of my boots scrapes against the wooden planks, the sound echoing in the quiet evening air.
Gaston’s slumped figure remains motionless, except for the occasional lift of his hand to bring the flask to his lips.
His eyes are fixed on the ground, unseeing.
The familiar scent of whiskey and leather drifts toward me as I pass, mingling with the faint hint of sweat and dirt that clings to him.
My skirts brush against the worn leather of his boots, but I keep my gaze straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge his presence.
A soft gasp escapes his lips, and I hear him shift in his seat.
My hand reaches for the handle of the tavern door, fingers wrapping around the cold metal as I pull it open.
"Wait," Gaston's voice cracks, barely above a whisper.
I pause, the door half-open, and turn to face him, my heart pounding in my chest.
Big Bad Bastard
"I never stopped loving you," he confesses, his eyes finally meeting mine with a desperate sincerity.
My hand trembles on the door handle, the weight of his words settling heavy in the air.
The leather of his jacket creaks softly as he shifts in his seat, his eyes never leaving mine.
I catch another whiff of whiskey on his breath, mingling with the faint scent of sweat and dirt that clings to him.
My chest tightens, memories flooding back like a tidal wave crashing against the shore of my mind.
The nights I waited for him, only to be left alone and disappointed.
The way he dismissed me with a careless wave of his hand.
The pain of watching him pursue others, while I stood by helplessly.
I force myself to remember Emma’s words, her warnings about Gaston’s manipulative ways.
Without turning to face him, I push the heavy wooden door open wider, letting the warm light from inside spill out onto the cobblestones between us.
"Please, just hear me out," he pleads, his voice raw with emotion.
Big Bad Bastard
I hesitate, the warmth from the tavern spilling over my back, contrasting with the chill of his desperation.
"Gaston, you had your chance," I reply, my voice steady despite the turmoil within.
