The stars are beautiful tonight
The stars were beautiful tonight.
More than beautiful, they were fascinating.
I lay on my blanket in the middle of nowhere and tilted my head back.
Stars filled the sky, more than I could count.
I’d tried once, when I was a kid.
I’d gotten to a thousand before I gave up.
Now I just enjoyed the view.
The hill we were on was perfect.
There were no trees to block our view, and very little light pollution.
We were far enough from the city that we could see most of the stars that were hidden by the smog.
"Wow, look at that one," Sarah said.
She sat up straight, her head near mine, and pointed.
"That bright red one."
"I think that’s Mars," Mark said.
He sat on the other side of me, lying nearly flat with his head on a pillow he’d brought from home.
He had his glasses on, but he wasn’t looking through binoculars like he usually did when we stargazed together.
I lie back down, content to soak in the vastness of the starry sky.
The cool grass beneath me rustles slightly as Sarah shifts beside me, her eyes still fixed on Mars.
Mark adjusts his glasses and reaches for his tablet, tapping a few buttons to bring up a star map.
"It's definitely Mars," he confirms, his voice calm and certain.
The night air is crisp, carrying the faint scent of wildflowers.
As I gaze upward, my mind drifts to thoughts of distant galaxies and the mysteries they hold.
Suddenly, a soft hum fills the air, barely audible at first.
We exchange puzzled glances before sitting up, scanning the horizon for its source.
There, at the edge of the hill, a faint glow emerges from the ground.
"What is that?" Sarah asks, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mark's eyes are fixed on the glow, his brow furrowed in concentration.
"I don't know," he says slowly, "but it's definitely not natural."
The hum grows louder, and I can feel a strange vibration beneath my feet.
The glow begins to take shape, forming a circular pattern on the ground.
Sarah grabs my arm, her grip tight with excitement or fear - I'm not sure which.
"Look!" she whispers urgently, pointing to the center of the circle.
A dark shape is rising from the ground, its edges indistinct in the flickering light.
My heart is racing as I watch, transfixed by the spectacle unfolding before us.
The shape grows taller, its presence both mesmerizing and terrifying.
