Oh God, I never thought… this is where our ruin began.
I stared at Elara Voss standing in the marketplace before me as tears welled up in my eyes.
All the pain and betrayal I had suffered because of her and my exboyfriend flooded back into my mind.
The market suddenly became a familiar place to me, and I remembered this was where I had last seen Elara before she stole my boyfriend and broke my heart.
It was also the last place I saw her before I vowed never to trust anyone again.
"You've got to be kidding me," I mumbled as Elara turned around and stared back at me.
She gasped when she saw me standing behind her, a shocked expression on her face.
I held the small basket in my hand tightly, the fresh fruits and vegetables in it almost falling out as I struggled to keep my emotions intact.
I gripped the basket so hard, my knuckles turning white from the intensity.
Elara stood right in front of me, her beautiful smile dazzling as she stared at me.
She was an epitome of beauty with an hourglass figure, her white blouse with sleeves fitted perfectly on her body, and her long hair flowed down to her elbows.
She had a fringe that stopped above her eyebrows, highlighting her striking eyes as she gazed at me.
My hands shook uncontrollably as rage and hurt coursed through my veins.
The wicker handle of the basket dug into my palm as Elara maintained that infuriating smile.
The market-goers went about their shopping, not noticing the tension between us.
I tried to speak, but my throat felt constricted.
The small basket slipped from my grip and hit the cobblestones with a hollow thud.
Apples and oranges rolled out of it, scattering across the floor, rolling between feet and stalls.
Some shoppers stopped to stare at us as I finally found my voice.
"How dare you show your face here?"
Elara's smile faltered, and she took a step back, her eyes wide with something that looked like regret.
"I didn't come here to hurt you again, I swear," she said softly, her voice barely audible over the market's hum.
"Then why are you here?" I demanded, my voice trembling with the weight of old wounds.
Elara regained her footing, and I froze.
The same perfume she wore all those years ago wafted up my nose, making my stomach churn.
I was close enough to see the slight crease between her brows, the faint scar above her lip from when we fell off our bikes as kids, and the flicker of something like remorse in her eyes.
My hands clenched into fists at my sides as memories flooded back: late-night talks, shared dreams, and the ultimate betrayal.
The past had finally caught up with us, and there was no escaping its reckoning.
