I smiled at my phone, seeing Kevin’s name on the screen.
It had been a few weeks since he had gone out of town for work, and I was missing him something fierce.
"Hey, baby," I said, trying to keep my voice from sounding too sulky.
"Hi, beautiful," he said.
I could hear the distance in his voice, and it only made me miss him more.
"How is everything going?"
I asked.
"Fine"
—he yawned—"I’m just really tired. I’ve been working so much that I think I’m going to need some extra sleep when I get back."
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me.
"That makes sense. Have you been thinking about me?"
I asked, trying to sound casual.
Kevin laughed.
"Of course, I have. All the time."
I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see me.
"That’s not true. You would call me more if you did."
"I’m sorry. It’s just been really crazy here. Maybe we can Facetime later tonight?"
Tonight?
That was hours away.
I wanted to talk to him now, but I didn’t want to seem like a brat.
"Okay"
—I sighed—"that sounds good."
Kevin and I talked for a few more minutes before we hung up.
As soon as we did, my phone buzzed with a text from Andrew.
