I need a secretary who is extremely competent and efficient.
Someone who can keep up with me and my business ventures.
Someone who can anticipate my needs before I even have to ask.
I want someone who is proactive, resourceful, and intelligent.
And of course, someone who looks good on my arm.
Someone who is going to make all the other girls green with envy when they see how gorgeous I am with my new secretary.
My phone buzzes against my wrist as I glance down at the time.
It’s only five minutes until my first interview.
"Ms. Harper is here for her interview," Lance says as he pokes his head through the door.
"Send her in."
Lance gives me a look before he rolls his eyes and mutters something under his breath.
He knows I don’t do interviews; I leave that up to the HR department.
But when it comes to finding a new secretary, I want to be involved.
I want to make sure the person who gets hired is going to be able to keep up with me and my demanding schedule.
"Mr. Winston, Ms. Harper is here," Alexsis says as she walks in with a young girl trailing behind her.
The girl is shy as she fumbles with her briefcase before setting it on the floor next to her chair.
"Thank you for coming in today, Ms. Harper," I say as I stand from behind my desk and walk toward her.
"No problem, Mr. Winston. It’s an honor to be here."
Bash Me
I lean back in my chair, studying her as she settles into the interview.
She’s neat and put together, her long brown hair pulled back into a tight ponytail.
She’s wearing a pair of black slacks with a white button-up shirt that looks like it was ironed to perfection.
She’s wearing a pair of black heels that make her look taller than her five-foot frame.
She’s wearing makeup but not too much.
Just enough to accentuate her features without looking like she’s trying too hard.
She’s very professional and I can tell she’s been preparing for this moment for a long time.
"Is there anything you’d like to know about me before we begin?"
I ask, breaking from the script that HR sent over.
Her eyes widen slightly as she realizes I’m not going to be asking her the same questions that every other interviewer has asked her today.
Bash Me
"No, Mr. Winston. I think I have everything I need."
I walk around my desk and take the seat next to her, watching as she straightens her back and sits up even taller.
"Good. Let’s get started then."
I lean back in my chair, steepling my fingers together as I study her.
She shifts in her seat, clearly uncomfortable with the silence between us.
Bash Me
I let it stretch on for another minute before I finally speak. "Do you think it’s acceptable for the CEO to have a relationship with one of his workers?"
I ask, watching as her fingers tighten around the portfolio in her lap.
Her smile never wavers as she meets my eyes dead on.
Something flashes behind them but it’s gone before I can figure out what it was.
I lean closer, studying her face for any sign that she’s not as composed as she seems.
Her knuckles are white where she grips the portfolio but other than that, she looks completely at ease.
The office feels smaller as I move even closer, invading her personal space.
She doesn’t flinch or try to move away from me, keeping her eyes locked on mine.
Her breathing picks up slightly and I know I’m getting to her but she still doesn’t move.
I reach over to grab her resume from the portfolio and brush my arm against hers in the process.
She shifts in her seat but doesn’t pull away from me.
I take my time flipping through the pages, letting my fingers linger on each sheet before I move on to the next one.
I can smell her perfume and it’s subtle and professional just like her outfit. I move even closer until our knees are almost touching and then I flip through the pages again.
This time, I let my fingers brush against hers as I turn the page and she shifts again, trying to get away from me without being obvious about it.
Bash Me
I flip through the pages again and then once more before I finally set it back down on top of the portfolio in her lap.
The tension is thick between us as we stare at each other for another minute before I finally speak.
"Thank you for coming in today, Ms. Harper."
She blinks a few times before she stands and gathers her things.
She turns to leave but stops when she realizes that her portfolio is empty.
Bash Me
"Mr. Winston, I believe you have something that belongs to me," she says, her voice steady despite the tension.
I glance down at the resume still in my hand and smirk, holding it up for her to see.
"Ah, yes. But before I return it, Ms. Harper, perhaps you should know that I don't just hire secretaries—I hire partners."
