A year ago today
I’m going to be so glad when this fight is over, I can’t wait another minute.
"Ready or not, here I come," Vinnie says, cracking his knuckles and grinning at me.
I roll my eyes.
"You really are a dork," I tell him, and he just shrugs, laughing.
We’ve been training together since we were kids, and tomorrow I’m going to go out there and kick some ass.
I can’t wait.
I’ve been training nonstop for the last few months, and I’m ready to go pro.
My body is at its limit, and I’ve pushed myself to the point where I know I can’t give any more.
"Let’s get your mind in the game," Vinnie says, serious now.
"You’ve trained for this moment every day for the last year. You’re ready, Jaxson. Go out there and show them what you’re made of."
I take a deep breath and close my eyes, picturing myself winning every single fight.
"I will," I tell him confidently.
This is what I was born to do.
It doesn’t matter if it’s boxing, kickboxing, or wrestling—I’m good at all of them.
And that’s why I chose to enter the open competition tomorrow.
Bad Boy Alphas
I grab my gym bag and head out the door with Vinnie.
We’re meeting at the facility for one last training session before tomorrow’s competition.
The smell of sweat and rubber mats hits me as soon as we walk in, and I breathe it in deeply.
It smells like home.
The facility is empty except for us, but that’s how I like it.
Vinnie and I start with some light stretching, our usual routine.
We’ve been doing this for so long that it’s second nature to us now.
I can feel the tension in my muscles from months of hard training, but I know that I need to loosen up if I want to perform my best tomorrow.
"Ready?"
Vinnie asks, holding up a pair of boxing gloves for me to slip on.
Bad Boy Alphas
I nod, and we head over to the punching bag.
Vinnie holds it steady while I throw combinations - jab, cross, hook.
Each strike is precise and measured, just like we practiced a thousand times before. After a few rounds on the bag, we move on to sparring.
We keep it technical today, not full contact since we don’t want to risk getting hurt before tomorrow’s fights.
My mind starts to wander as I throw punches at Vinnie, thinking about what it will be like when I step into the ring tomorrow morning.
"Focus!"
Vinnie snaps, dodging my next punch easily.
I shake my head and refocus on the task at hand.
We finish up our training session with some meditation exercises on the mat.
"Jaxson, there's something I need to tell you before tomorrow," Vinnie says, his voice unusually serious.
Bad Boy Alphas
I pause, looking at him curiously.
"The guy you're facing in the first round—he's the one who knocked me out last year."
I lean against the locker room wall, my arms folded across my chest as I listen to Vinnie recount his fight from last year.
His hands shake slightly as he describes how his opponent caught him with a hook he never saw coming.
"I didn’t even know what hit me," Vinnie says, shaking his head.
"One minute I was fighting, and the next I was out cold on the mat."
I study the competition bracket posted on the wall, searching for the name of Vinnie’s opponent.
There it is—Storm, a female fighter from New York.
I trace my fingers over her name, committing every detail to memory.
"Did you know she was a girl?"
I ask, glancing back at Vinnie.
He nods, his eyes clouded with memories.
Bad Boy Alphas
"Yeah, I knew. But that wasn’t why she knocked me out. She was good. Really good."
I look back at the bracket, taking in Storm’s record: fifteen wins, no losses.
A shiver runs down my spine as I realize just how formidable she must be in the ring.
Vinnie grabs my shoulder, his grip tight with concern.
"Don’t make the same mistake I did," he warns.
Bad Boy Alphas
I nod, already mentally preparing myself for tomorrow’s fight.
"Jaxson, there's more," Vinnie continues, his voice dropping to a whisper.
I raise an eyebrow, sensing the weight of his words.
"Storm's been training with a new coach—your old mentor, Coach Davis."
