I was half-asleep on the couch when I felt a strange tingling in my teeth and bones.
It was a weird, vibrating hum that seemed to shake the very air around me.
I sat up and looked around, but my mom was gone, and the TV was off.
I wondered if I was having some kind of dream.
But it didn't feel like a dream.
It felt real.
And then the lights went out.
Not just in my house, but all up and down the street.
I stood and looked out the window.
The whole neighborhood was dark.
"Mom?" I called.
"I'm right here, honey. Don't worry."
She stood at the kitchen door, a look of concern on her face as she stared into the darkness outside.
"What's going on?"
I asked her.
"I don't know. Maybe a power outage?"
But I knew it wasn't just a power outage.
That humming feeling was still there, vibrating through every cell in my body.
And then there was a flash of white light that filled the room, making me shield my eyes.
When it faded, I looked out the window again and saw something that made my jaw drop.
A big, glowing portal had appeared right in the middle of the street outside my house.
It crackled and hummed with energy, sending waves of heat rippling up into the air.
