I swiped right by accident.
My finger was warming a cup of coffee in my lap and then, in a move that I still to this day cannot explain, I reached out and swiped right on the guy staring back at me from my phone.
I mean, I was single and all, but I wasn’t actively looking for anything serious.
I’d been burned too many times before, and besides, my focus was on my career right now.
I was a graphic designer at a small firm in their portfolio department, but I was itching to move over to the design department.
I wanted to create something of my own rather than just sitting around and making other people’s stuff look pretty.
But anyway, back to the guy.
His name was Eli, and he was good looking.
Two days had passed since I last heard from Eli, and the silence was starting to get under my skin. I checked my phone for what felt like the hundredth time, but there were no new messages. Jet watched me with a knowing gaze as I paced the room, his eyes following me like a security camera.
I couldn’t help but think back to our date at the speakeasy lounge. Eli had been charming, cultured—the kind of guy who could effortlessly discuss everything from the nuances of single-malt whiskey to the symbolism in a particular art piece. His golden aura had flickered with hints of something darker, though—something that had piqued my interest.
At first, I thought it was just a shadow or two, nothing out of the ordinary. But as we talked, I started to sense that there was more to it than that. It wasn’t until he excused himself to go to the bathroom that I realized why.
His aura was different when he wasn’t looking at me.
The next morning, Dani called me as I was getting ready for work.
"Hazel, oh my god," she said, her voice crackling through the speakerphone.
"What?"
I asked, slipping on my leather jacket and grabbing my bag.
"I just got the most amazing text from that guy you set me up with. He’s hilarious, and his energy is so grounded. I can already tell this is going to be good!"
I smiled, feeling a surge of satisfaction.
"That’s awesome! I knew it!"
"Seriously, thank you. You have no idea how much I needed this. He’s already asking me out—tonight!"
"Wow, that was fast," I said, unlocking the door to my apartment and heading out into the hall.
"Yeah, I know! But it feels right. I’m so glad you pushed me to do this."
I laughed, feeling a little proud of myself.
"Well, don’t get too carried away yet. You never know what he’s like in person."
"True," she said, "but I have a good feeling about this."
As we chatted, Jet padded out into the hall behind me and gave a little mew.
"Sorry, buddy," I said.
CHAPTER FOUR
Two days later, Dani called me up, sounding like she was walking on clouds. "Hazel, I have no idea how you did it, but I think I might be falling for this guy. Like, seriously falling. He’s everything I’ve been looking for."
I laughed, feeling a little proud of myself. "Told you. That green aura of his? Perfect match for your energy."
"You know," Dani said, "I think you should start a matchmaking service. You have a gift."
I shrugged, even though she couldn’t see me. "Maybe I will."
"Well, if you do, count me as your first client. Seriously, I don’t know what you did to find him, but… wow."
"I’ll keep that in mind," I said with a grin.
Dani and I chatted for a bit longer before she had to run off for another PR meeting.
As soon as we hung up, my phone buzzed again.
Eli.
"I’ve been thinking," he typed. "Would you like to meet up this weekend?"
My heart skipped a beat.
It was finally happening.
The date I had been waiting for—and worrying about—for what felt like an eternity.
I sighed, feeling a little like I was losing my grip on reality. Maybe I was reading too much into things. Maybe Eli was just a player who enjoyed toying with girls.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to him than that.
My phone buzzed, and I walked over to grab it, hoping against hope that it was Eli.
It wasn’t.
Instead, I found a text from an unknown number.
"Hi, Hazel. This is a representative from AuraSwipe. We came across your profile and were impressed by your unique energy. We're looking for people like you to participate in our beta program. Would you be interested in learning more?"
I stared at the message, my heart racing.
Unique energy?
What did they mean by that?
They couldn't know about my abilities... could they?
I hesitated for a second before typing out a reply.
"What do you mean by 'unique energy'? And what kind of beta program are we talking about?"
There was a long pause before the response came through.
He was everywhere, even as I rode the taxi back to my apartment. His presence lingered in my mind like a ghost, impossible to shake. The city lights blurred outside the window, but my thoughts were stuck on him.
I replayed our conversation again and again, analyzing every word and gesture. How much of what he’d said was true? How much was a lie? And what did he mean by "other parties"? Was he talking about the CIA?
The more I thought about it, the more questions I had—and the more uneasy I became. Jet sensed my tension and curled up beside me, offering silent comfort.
I couldn’t help but wonder if Eli was right—was I just naive about how much surveillance we were under? Were the CIA documents I’d seen just the tip of some larger iceberg?
The truth was, I didn’t know much about how the government handled magickal entities. Sure, I’d heard rumors of certain organizations that policed those with abilities, but it wasn’t like there were any official channels for reporting or seeking help.
That much was clear: Eli was hiding something. If he wasn’t part of some government agency, then what was his end game?
The next morning, I stood outside the coffee shop near AuraSwipe's headquarters. My eyes scanned the bustling crowd, searching for someone in a green jacket.
My heart raced with anticipation and anxiety—the caffeine I'd consumed only heightened my nerves. Jet perched on my shoulder, alert and watchful.
I clutched my phone tightly, replaying the developer's warning in my mind. This meeting could reveal crucial information about AuraSwipe's true nature, but it could also be a trap.
As people passed by, I remained vigilant, determined to identify my contact.
I rushed home, my mind racing. Dani had to be warned—now. My fingers trembled as I dialed her number, pacing my cramped apartment.
Jet watched me intently, sensing my anxiety.
The phone rang, and my heart pounded.
"Hazel! What's up?"
Dani's cheerful voice cut through the tension.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.
"Eli," I blurted out. "He's not who we think he is."
"What do you mean?"
Her tone shifted from carefree to concerned.
"He's some kind of operative. They're using AuraSwipe to track people like us—aura readers, witches, empaths. You have to delete the app."
"Wait, what? How do you know this?"
Dani's voice was laced with skepticism.
"I met him last night," I explained, the words tumbling out in a frantic stream.
"He wasn't what I expected at all. Then I got a message from a developer at AuraSwipe warning me about him."
"Holy shit," she breathed.
"I'm serious, Dani. You have to be careful. They might come after you."
"They? Who?"
