I’m completely absorbed in my current experiment when I feel an unexpected hand on my shoulder.
My reaction is instinctive and immediate: I yelp and jump before turning to face the person who dared to touch me without my permission.
But when I see who it is, I stop short and gape at him in shock.
“Jacob Black,” I murmur in disbelief.
He’s even more gorgeous in person than he is in the news articles I’ve shamelessly read over the years.
I’ve always been fascinated with him, and I never thought I’d meet him like this.
I look around and realize that my entire lab is focused on me.
They’re all waiting to see what I’ll do.
As a DNA scientist, I spend most of my time in my lab.
It’s one of the few places where I feel truly alive and free.
This is where I belong.
So you can imagine how disruptive it is for someone to barge in here like they own the place.
He smiles at me, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
I don’t let his presence rattle me.
Instead, I keep my eyes trained on him as I turn off the machines to put them in standby mode.
I’ll need to finish this experiment later.
I take off my gloves and set them on the counter.
My lab is already silent, but now it’s eerily so.
The only sounds are the hum of the machines and my shoes on the tile floor as I walk toward Jacob.
He watches me with dark eyes, and as we stand face-to-face, I realize that he’s much taller than me, and he’s built like a brick house.
He’s all muscle and power, but there’s something about his eyes that makes me think he’s not here to hurt me.
He’s here for a reason, and right now, that reason is me.
We’re so close that if I wanted to, I could reach out and touch him.
But I don’t want to.
I’m not sure what he would do if I did that, and quite frankly, that scares me a little bit.
But what scares me more is that he has the power to scare me at all.
Jacob Black doesn’t scare easily, or so they say.
My name is Asher Williams, and you can think of DNA as the building blocks of life.
Everyone has two sets of genes: one from each parent.
Genes contain the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all living things.
They determine our hair color, eye color, height, and so on.
But they also play a huge role in whether or not we develop certain diseases because our genes control how our cells operate too.
And that’s where I come in.
I work in a DNA research lab where we study genetic diseases and try to find cures for them.
We also study the DNA of shifters—people who can turn into animals at will—to see if we can help them too.
We know what causes lycanthropy (the disease that makes someone a shifter), but so far, no one has been able to find a cure for it.
My job is to identify shifter genetic markers so that I can figure out which ones are responsible for lycanthropy and which ones are simply responsible for the animal part of a shifter’s DNA makeup.
But I can’t do any of that without polymerase chain reactions (PCRs).
