I was having a bad day.
I’d just gotten into an argument with my mother, I’d spilled coffee all over my favorite shirt, and I’d been unable to find my favorite pen.
I was beginning to think that I was running out of patience when I came across the old book.
I had found it in the back of a closet, dusty and cobweb-covered.
It looked old, the leather binding cracked and faded to a pale brown.
Silver runes danced across the cover, reflecting what little light was in the room.
Curious, I opened the book to find that the words were written in an ancient language that I couldn’t decipher.
Not that I could read any other language other than English, but something told me that this wasn’t Latin or French or anything else that they taught in school.
As I flipped through the pages, I noticed that there were strange diagrams and illustrations.
Some depicted potions, others showed how to butcher different animals for their organs.
Others depicted hexes and spells.
I was beginning to think that it was some sort of witchcraft book when I heard a strange noise behind me.
Turning around, I noticed that my cat, Midnight, was watching me with eyes that were an unnatural purple.
