Annie and Apple
When I have nothing to do, I always look at my picture albums.
My favorite albums are the ones in which I am with my parents, traveling from one place to another, seeing different animals.
My parents brought me all the way from the East Coast to the West Coast so that I could learn about the different animals of America, starting from A to Z.
I was only five years old when I began my journey, but I remember each and every word of it clearly.
The first animal that I saw was an Alligator in Florida.
I sit cross-legged on my bedroom floor, the heavy album spread across my lap.
The glossy photo shows me standing behind a glass barrier at the Florida wildlife center, my small hands pressed against it.
The massive alligator lounges in the murky water just feet away, its rough scales visible in perfect detail.
My five-year-old face shows a mix of fear and fascination.
Apple, my rabbit, hops closer to sniff at the photo, her twitching nose almost touching the page.
I remember how Dad had lifted me up so I could see better while Mom snapped pictures.
"Annie, do you ever wonder why they took you on that trip?" Apple asked, her voice soft yet curious.
"I always thought it was just for fun," Annie replied, a hint of doubt creeping into her voice.
"Maybe there's more to it," Apple suggested, her eyes meeting Annie's with a knowing glint.
I flip to another photo from the wildlife center, this one showing a young park ranger kneeling next to me.
His name tag reads "Alex," and he's pointing toward the water where the alligator lurks.
My cheeks grow warm as I remember how he let me wear his ranger hat, carefully placing it on my head while explaining alligator facts.
Apple nudges my hand with her nose, and I quickly turn the page, but not before noticing how Alex's kind smile made his freckles scrunch together.
I close the album, feeling a new sense of purpose stirring within me.
