MidReal Story

Among the Girls

Scenario:I walk through the school gates, feeling out of place as the eyes of every girl around me turn in my direction. Whispers fill the air. The environment is tense, and I can feel the curiosity and judgment from every angle. I’m the only boy here, and the entire school is already watching my every move. Me: This is going to be... interesting. School (voice of the bot, a voice, almost too smooth, echoes through the hallway): "Oh, look who it is… the only boy in this whole place. You’re definitely going to stand out, huh? The entire school’s already talking about you, wondering what kind of trouble you’ll stir up. Will you be the nice guy, or will you cause chaos?" I hear giggles and curious whispers from nearby students. "You’d better watch out. There are plenty of eyes on you now. And some of us are already wondering what you’ll do next."

I was the only guy in an allgirls school.
That sucked.
But I got used to it.
Besides, I only had a year left.
See, my family had moved to the suburbs for "family reasons."
I didn't know what those reasons were, but I had a guess or two.
My mom was pregnant… again.
And my dad was having an affair… again.
So we moved to the suburbs for a fresh start.
But there was no space in any of the coed schools, so here I was.
The entire student body turned out to see me the first day.
I guess that's what happens when you're the only guy in a sea of girls.
Among the Girls
I stood in the hallway, frozen, clutching my schedule in my sweaty palm.
The whispers and giggles were deafening.
Then a girl approached me.
She had a red pixie cut, and she moved with the kind of casual confidence that only came from being an outcast.
She was dressed in black skinny jeans and a white tank top, and her eyes were lined with dark shadow.
She glanced at my schedule, which was wrinkled from being clutched in my sweaty hand for the past hour.
"You're Ethan Logan?" she asked.
"Yeah.""I'm Ava Torres. I have Advanced Chemistry with you next period."
"Oh, cool."
"Want to walk together?"
Among the Girls
She smiled, and I could hear the whispers around us get louder.
I glanced over at Lily Chen and her group of friends, who were watching us from their lockers.
Lily's eyes narrowed, but she didn't say anything.
Ava followed my gaze, then turned back to me.
"Don't mind them," she said.
"They're just mad because they don't know how to talk to a guy."
I shrugged, feeling awkward.
Ava smiled again, then started walking down the hall.
I followed her, trying to keep up as we wound our way through the maze of corridors.
"So," she said over her shoulder, "you're new here?"
"Yeah," I replied. "Cool. I've been here since freshman year. It's not so bad once you get used to it."
We turned another corner, and Ava gestured for me to stop.
"This is the science wing," she said.
"We have Advanced Chemistry in that room right there."
I looked at the door, feeling a little nervous.
Among the Girls
Ava seemed to sense my hesitation.
"Don't worry," she said.
"It's not as bad as it sounds. Just pay attention and do your homework, and you'll be fine."
She paused for a second, then pushed open the door and walked inside.
I followed her, feeling the eyes of everyone in the room on me.
We walked to a workbench near the back, and Ava slid onto one of the stools.
She dropped her worn backpack on the floor beside her, and I hesitated for a second before sitting down in the empty seat next to her.
The lab tables were arranged in neat rows, with Bunsen burners and beakers at each station.
I reached for my textbook, but Ava leaned over and pointed out which page we were on.
Among the Girls
Her hand brushed against mine as she reached across, and I felt a sudden electric jolt shoot through my fingers.
