I enjoy spending time outdoors.
It's a great way to get exercise and fresh air.
There's a location that's very popular with a certain type of person.
It's hard to estimate, but I would guess thousands upon thousands of very tall young men spend their time there.
One of them is me.
Being around so many people who look like me, I feel selfconscious about my height.
I don't know what it is, but I just am.
It's a silly feeling to have, as there's nothing I can do about it.
Besides, it's not like all the other tall young men are staring at me.
They're all doing their own thing, which makes the feeling even sillier.
I've had a few conversations with some of the men who go there regularly.
Jason Mitchell is one of them.
He's friendly and outgoing.
We've talked a few times and realized we have some similar interests.
Mark Thompson is another one.
He's more reserved than Jason, but once you get him talking, he's very thoughtful and observant about his surroundings.
I'm not sure if either of them would be considered friends, but they're familiar faces in a sea of unfamiliar ones.
Among Tall Men
I walk along the winding path that runs through the middle of the location.
It's a beautiful day, so there are clusters of men scattered across the grass, doing their own thing.
Some are throwing frisbees or playing catch with a ball.
Others are sitting in groups, talking or laughing together.
Some are reading on blankets they've spread across the grass.
As I pass by one group, Jason waves from his seat on a nearby bench.
I nod at him and take a seat beside him.
"Wow, it's really crowded today," I comment, looking around at all the men.
"Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen this many people here," Jason agrees, following my gaze.
We watch as a group of guys settles into an open area of grass.
Among Tall Men
They spread out a blanket and pull out some books.
I notice Mark approaching from the side and nod at him as he gets closer.
He nods back in greeting and takes a seat on the ground crosslegged, facing us. "It's a nice day," Jason says after a moment of silence.
"Probably why everyone came out."
"Yeah," Mark says softly, "I bet it is."
The conversation drifts for a bit as we all enjoy the weather.
It's warm but not too hot, with a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of the trees.
A few more men come down the path and find an empty spot to settle into.
As more arrive, the density of people increases.
Soon there's not an open patch of grass anywhere.
Among Tall Men
The men are all standing shoulder to shoulder now, each one facing a different direction to try and give everyone some personal space.
I shift uncomfortably on my seat on the bench, feeling a bit claustrophobic from all the bodies around me.
Jason and Mark don't seem to mind at all, though.
Maybe they're just more used to it than me.
I shift my weight from one foot to the other, trying to find a little extra space.
It's getting so crowded that I can barely move my arms without bumping into someone.
The crowd continues to swell.
More and more tall young men flood into the area, coming from every direction.
Jason is still talking about his weekend plans, but I'm not paying attention.
I'm distracted by the constant stream of new arrivals.
I catch glimpses of them through gaps between shoulders and heads as they come up the different paths and entrances.
The sea of tall bodies stretches out as far as I can see in all directions.
When someone's elbow jabs me hard in the ribs, I stumble sideways, bumping into Mark.
"Sorry about that," I mutter, trying to regain my balance.
Among Tall Men
Mark looks at me with a knowing expression, "It's happening again, isn't it?"
Jason leans in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper, "Do you think it's another gathering like last time?"
