I was on a stakeout with my team when I saw it.
The full moon.
I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now I realize that was the moment everything changed.
When I got back to the office, I found them all in the break room, eating takeout and chatting.
I joined them, and we talked about the case for a while before calling it a night.
I went home and went to bed, not realizing what was happening to me.
The next morning, I woke up with a start, my heart pounding in my chest.
I had no idea what had woken me up until I heard the sound of footsteps running down the hall.
I threw off the covers and bolted out of bed.
The footsteps were frantic, echoing through the hallway like a drumbeat.
I swung open my bedroom door and stepped into the corridor.
Aaron was there, his eyes glowing an eerie yellow, fangs bared.
"Aaron!" I called out, but he didn't seem to hear me.
He growled, low and menacing, struggling to control his instincts.
Further down the hall, Derek was pacing back and forth, fists clenched.
He suddenly punched the wall, leaving a deep dent in the plaster.
"What's happening?" I shouted, trying to make sense of the chaos.
Emily was near the stairs, her body trembling as she paced.
She looked at me with wild eyes, trying to think clearly but failing.
JJ was crouched in a corner, clutching her head as if in pain.
Her senses must have been overwhelmed by the transformation.
I took a deep breath and stepped forward, asserting my presence.
"Everyone, calm down!" I commanded, my voice steady and firm.
They all turned to look at me, fear and confusion etched on their faces.
"We've transformed," I said, trying to keep my own panic at bay. "Into werewolves."
Aaron growled again but seemed to regain some control.
Derek stopped pacing and stared at me, his eyes still glowing.
Emily took a deep breath and tried to steady herself.
JJ looked up from her crouched position, tears streaming down her face.
"We need to stay calm," I continued. "We can get through this together."
Aaron took a step towards me, his body still trembling with power. "How do we control it?" he asked through gritted teeth.
"I don't know yet," I admitted. "But we will figure it out."
Derek punched the wall again, frustration evident in his every move. "This is insane!"
"I know," I said softly. "But we have to stay focused."
Emily nodded slowly. "What do we do now?"
"We need to find a safe place," I replied. "Somewhere we won't hurt anyone."
JJ stood up shakily. "And then what?"
"Then we learn how to control this," I said firmly. "Together."
The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, and every rustle of leaves seemed amplified in the stillness of the night.
I led the way, my senses heightened by our recent transformation, guiding us to an abandoned cabin I remembered from a previous case.
Aaron paced back and forth in front of the cabin, his frustration evident in his clenched fists.
His eyes still held that eerie yellow glow, a constant reminder of what we had become.
"Damn it, Spencer," he muttered under his breath. "How are we supposed to deal with this?"
Derek's eyes darted around, scanning the perimeter for any potential threats.
"We need to stay alert," he said, his voice tense. "We don't know what else is out here."
Emily sat on a fallen log near the cabin entrance, her mind clearly racing with questions.
She stared at the ground, her brow furrowed in concentration.
"Why us?" she finally asked, looking up at me. "Why did this happen to us?"
JJ winced as she leaned against a tree, still adjusting to her heightened senses.
Every sound seemed to cause her physical pain, and she clutched her head in an attempt to block it out.
"I can't take this," she whispered, her voice trembling.
I took a deep breath and addressed the team. "Everyone, focus on your breathing," I instructed, trying to ease their anxiety.
"Inhale slowly through your nose, hold it for a moment, and then exhale through your mouth."
I demonstrated the technique, hoping they would follow suit.
Aaron was the first to manage it; his face a mix of relief and determination as he began to regain control over his breathing.
Derek struggled but eventually succeeded, his muscles relaxing slightly as he focused on my instructions.
Emily and JJ took longer; their fear was palpable as they tried to steady themselves.
"Now," I continued once everyone had calmed down a bit, "I'm going to show you how to shift back to human form."
I closed my eyes and concentrated, feeling the change ripple through my body.
It was painful but necessary.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back to my human self.
"See? It's possible," I said, looking at each of them in turn.
"You just have to focus."
Aaron gritted his teeth and closed his eyes.
His body trembled as he fought against the transformation.
After a few agonizing moments, he managed it.
He stood there, panting heavily but human once more.
Derek watched Aaron closely before attempting it himself.
He struggled visibly, his muscles twitching and contorting as he fought for control.
Finally, with a guttural growl, he succeeded.
He collapsed onto one knee, gasping for breath but victorious.
Emily and JJ exchanged nervous glances before trying it themselves.
Emily's fear was evident in her trembling hands as she concentrated.
It took longer for her than for Aaron or Derek, but eventually she managed it.
She looked up at me with wide eyes filled with relief.
JJ was last; her fear almost paralyzing her.
But with Emily's encouragement and my guidance, she too managed to shift back.
She fell into Emily's arms sobbing but relieved.
"This is just the beginning," I said quietly as I looked at my team.
"We have a lot to learn about controlling these new abilities."
Suddenly, a loud snap echoed through the woods.
We all turned towards the sound instinctively.
"Stay alert!" Derek hissed.
