Alex Douglas
I never saw myself as a father.
Sure, I was a professional hockey player, but my career wasn’t focused on scoring in any way other than on the ice.
I was more interested in scoring goals and making a name for myself in the sport to carry on my family’s legacy as the best hockey players in the world.
My dad was a little less enthusiastic about me being a hockey player, so he groomed me to take over the family business, Douglas Enterprises.
I’d have to work my ass off to get it to be as successful as it was when I took it over, but I wasn’t worried about that.
It was just the principle of giving up on my dream of being a pro hockey player that bothered me.
That and the fact that I knew I’d never be able to make dad proud if I didn’t follow in his footsteps.
If I gave up this sport, we wouldn’t have a connection.
I wouldn’t be able to make him proud.
And that was important to me because he was a hardass who was never satisfied with anything I’d done yet.
He might’ve been proud of me in private, but he never showed it.
He always told me I had to do better.
But everything changed when Emily came into my life.
I didn’t have a choice when her mother left her and disappeared without a trace.
I would’ve done anything for Emily, no matter what it took, and I intended to be the best father I could be for her.
I’d only had her for a few weeks, so I was still in the stage of trying to get used to having her around and trying to figure out how to take care of her properly, but I was doing everything I could to make it work because she depended on me.
The first thing I did was hire someone to take care of Emily while I was at practice or games and make sure she was well taken care of at home when I was there.
I didn’t really know what to do with her yet, so I wanted someone who did.
Other than that, I’d given up playing in games for now and only attended practices as far as hockey went.
My agent wasn’t happy about it, but he understood why I had to do what I did.
And then there was my dad.
I knew he wouldn’t be happy about it, but I called him in a panic after Emily’s mother disappeared and told him what had happened and that I needed his help figuring out how to take care of her.
He told me that there were plenty of nannies out there who could watch her while I worked.
Afterward, he hung up on me and said we shouldn’t mix family with business or else things could get complicated.
That was the only support he offered me while trying to figure everything out.
He didn’t give me any advice or ask if there was anything else he could do for me.
But then again, that was just like him.
I might’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out how to raise a baby girl on my own and how to keep her happy and healthy, but I would do whatever it took to make sure she got everything she wanted in life.
