After a disaster 16 year old teen boys Dimitris and Tibi and teen girl Emmelia are the only ones left in the world and they live in the same house so they can survive.
Dimitris
He is a survivor with knowledge of mechanics and engineering. He is resourceful, determined, and protective. Dimitris lost everyone he loved in a catastrophic event and struggles with loneliness. He manages to survive by scavenging for food and maintaining a shelter. He forms a bond with Emmelia, another survivor, and tries to create a sense of normalcy and companionship. Dimitris is cautious but slowly opens up to the idea of having someone by his side.
Emmelia
She is a survivor with knowledge of gardening and cooking. She is optimistic, friendly, and resourceful. Emmelia meets Dimitris and Tibi and invites them to her shelter, offering them food and companionship. She forms a bond with the brothers, providing hope for a future together. Emmelia challenges Dimitris' solitudeseeking lifestyle, encouraging him to embrace life again. Her presence brings a sense of hope and warmth to the otherwise isolated environment.
Tibi
He is Dimitris' younger brother, also survived the catastrophic event. He is quiet, shy, and loyal. Tibi follows Dimitris' lead and helps with household chores. Although he doesn't contribute much to the conversations, he provides emotional support to Dimitris. Tibi's presence brings a sense of family back to Dimitris, offering some comfort amidst the chaos. His relationship with Dimitris is crucial as they navigate their new reality together.
I was sixteen years old when the catastrophe happened.
I was in the garage with Tibi, my little brother who was fourteen years old at that time.
We were the only ones left in the world as far as I know.
The chances that there are other survivors like us somewhere else are too small to even think about it.
I don’t know what it was, but something happened, and from one second to another, all people just disappeared.
I don’t know how I and my brother survived.
I guess it’s because we were in the garage, which was like a sealed room at that time.
I remember it was night, and we were so tired after working on our car all day, not knowing what would happen next in just a few minutes.
I remember I heard a strange sound, like a big roar, and then nothing.
It took me a while to realize what happened.
I looked around and still saw people moving, driving their cars, and walking on the streets outside our garage.
I looked at Tibi, who was looking at me, confused, and then we both went outside to see what happened.
But there was no one.
No one in the streets, no cars moving, and no one in the houses.
I looked around, but I couldn’t find anyone.
I called out for people, but no one answered.
It was like we were the only two people left in the world.
We were both shocked and scared.
We didn’t know what to do.
We just stood there for a while, not knowing what to say or do.
Then we went back to the garage and closed the door behind us.
We sat on the floor and tried to understand what happened.
After a while, we decided that we should go outside and try to find other survivors.
But we didn’t know where to start.
So we just walked around our neighborhood and looked for anyone who might be alive.
But there was no one. We walked around for hours, but we couldn’t find anyone.
It was like we were the only two people left in the world.
We went back to the garage and sat on the floor again.
We were both tired and hungry.
We didn’t know what to do next.
But then I heard a sound outside the garage door.
I looked at Tibi, and he looked scared.
I got up and went to the door and opened it slowly.
And there she was, Emmelia, our neighbor’s daughter who was sixteen years old just like me.
She looked scared too, but when she saw us, she smiled and came inside the garage with us.
She told us that she had been hiding in her house all day after everyone disappeared.
She didn’t know what happened or where everyone went. We told her that we didn’t know either, but we were going to try to find out what happened and where everyone went.
She said that she wanted to come with us because she was scared to stay alone in her house.
So we all went to her house and took some clothes and food, and then we went back to our house.
We all stayed in the same house together.
It was a little weird at first, but we got used to it.
Emmelia helped us with everything, and she even cooked for us sometimes.
She was a good cook, and Tibi and I loved her food.
After a few months, we started to get used to our new life.
We started to go out more often and explore the city.
We found some other survivors too, but they were not as friendly as Emmelia.
So we decided to stay away from them.
One day, while we were out exploring the city, we found a big garden full of vegetables and fruits.
We were so happy because we had been eating canned food for months, and it was getting old.
So we decided to take some of the vegetables and fruits back home with us.
When we got home, Emmelia helped us cook them, and we had a big feast.
After that day, we started to go to the garden every week to get fresh vegetables and fruits. One day while we were in the garden, Emmelia told me that she wanted to start planting some vegetables in our backyard too.
I told her that it was a good idea because it would be easier for us to get fresh vegetables every day.
So she started planting some vegetables in our backyard, and Tibi helped her too.
They both worked hard in the garden every day, and soon we had fresh vegetables every day.
One evening while we were having dinner together, Emmelia told us that she wanted to expand the garden because she wanted to make sure that we had enough food for the future.
I looked at her and asked her what she meant by "the future."
She just smiled at me and said that she meant that she wanted to make sure that we had enough food for all of us.
I didn’t know what she meant by "all of us," but I didn’t ask her anything else because I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. After dinner, I went upstairs to my room and lay down on my bed.
I was thinking about what Emmelia said earlier when I heard someone coming up the stairs.
I looked at my door and saw Tibi coming inside my room with his notebook in his hand.
He sat down on his bed and started writing something in his notebook.
I looked at him curiously because I had never seen him write anything in his notebook before.
"Hey, Tibi, what are you writing?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
He looked up, a serious expression on his face. "I'm keeping track of everything that's happening... in case we need to remember."
I nodded, understanding.
"Okay. That's a good idea."
We both sat in silence for a while before Tibi spoke again.
"Hey, have you thought about what Emmelia said earlier?"
I turned to look at him.
"What do you mean?"
He hesitated, then said, "About the future. And all of us."
I shrugged.
"I don't know. I guess she means we need to make sure we have enough food for ourselves."
Tibi nodded slowly, but I could tell he was still thinking about something else.
"What is it?" I asked him.
He sighed and closed his notebook.
"I don't know. It's just... sometimes I wonder if we're really the only ones left."
I didn't say anything, unsure of how to respond.
We both sat in silence for a while longer before Tibi finally spoke up again.
"Goodnight," he said softly, getting up from his bed and walking out of my room.
I watched him go, feeling a sense of unease wash over me.
I lay back down on my bed and tried to fall asleep, but my mind kept wandering back to what Emmelia had said earlier. During dinner one evening, Emmelia brought up a topic that had been weighing heavily on her mind lately.
She put down her fork and looked at us directly.
"We need to talk about something important," she said, her voice filled with determination.
Tibi and I exchanged a glance, wondering what she wanted to discuss.
Emmelia took a deep breath before continuing.
"As far as we know, we are the last humans on earth. And if that's the case, it's our responsibility to make sure that humanity doesn't become extinct."
She paused for a moment, allowing her words to sink in.
"We need to have children," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
The room fell silent as Tibi and I processed what she had just said.
We both knew that this conversation was inevitable, but it still felt surreal to hear it out loud.
Tibi was the first to break the silence.
"What do you mean by 'we'?" he asked cautiously.
Emmelia looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I mean all of us," she replied softly.
I could see Tibi's hands trembling as he gripped his glass tighter. The weight of what Emmelia was suggesting hung heavily in the air.
We were two brothers and one girl, living in a world where there were no other humans left.
Tibi finally spoke, his voice shaky.
"But how can we even think about bringing children into this world?"
Emmelia wiped her eyes and replied, "Because if we don't, there won't be a world left for anyone."
After another quiet dinner, I noticed Tibi lingering in the kitchen while Emmelia cleaned up.
He was helping her dry dishes, standing closer than usual as she passed him plates to put away.
Their hands brushed against each other every time she handed him a plate, and I couldn't help but feel my chest tighten as I watched them laugh together.
When Emmelia excused herself to go check on the garden, I confronted Tibi.
"What are you doing?" I demanded.
Tibi straightened up and met my eyes.
"Someone has to continue humanity," he said quietly.
"And why should it be you?"
I snapped back, my voice rising.
Tibi flinched but didn't back down.
"I'm not a kid anymore, Dimitri."
I grabbed his shirt collar and pushed him against the counter.
"You're my little brother," I growled.
Tibi's eyes flashed with defiance.
"And you're not my father, Dimitri," he shot back, his voice steady despite the situation.
I released him, stepping back as the weight of our reality settled between us.
I sit alone in the garage, tinkering with an old radio to distract myself from the tension in the house.
Through the window, I can see Emmelia and Tibi talking in hushed voices by the garden.
They've been doing this a lot lately, whispering and having secret meetings.
It's starting to get on my nerves.
After a while, they finally come inside, and Emmelia calls out to me.
"Dimitri, we need to have a serious discussion," she says, her voice firm but uncertain.
I sigh and put down the radio, following them into the living room.
Emmelia sits on the couch, Tibi next to her.
They both look at me with a mix of determination and fear in their eyes.
"We need to talk about continuing humanity," Emmelia says again, her voice steady.
I nod, knowing what's coming next.
"And we've decided that we need to compare ourselves to see who should father children," Tibi blurts out before I can respond. I stare at them both, unable to believe what I'm hearing.
"Compare yourselves? What does that even mean?"
I ask, my voice rising in frustration.
Emmelia takes a deep breath before answering.
"It means we need to decide who is more capable of being a good father. And we've come up with a plan."
I slam my wrench down on the table and storm out of the room, leaving them standing there in awkward silence.
I pace back and forth in my bedroom, seething over their ridiculous proposal.
A knock at the door interrupts my thoughts, and Emmelia enters with Tibi behind her.
She holds a ruler in her hand and explains matter-of-factly, "We need an objective way to decide."
Before I can protest, she starts unbuttoning her shirt.
"We should all get comfortable," she says, her voice steady but her eyes betraying uncertainty.
Tibi's face turns bright red as he hesitantly follows Emmelia's lead.
I stand frozen in shock as they both stand before me, exposed and vulnerable.
Emmelia takes a deep breath and begins the process, measuring Tibi first with a detached expression.
I watch in a daze as she clinically records the numbers, my mind struggling to comprehend the surreal scene unfolding before me.
When they turn to me, I mechanically comply, my mind detached from the humiliation of it all.
The numbers are compared, and their ridiculous test confirms what they wanted to know.
