After being rejected by her adopted brother, Layla runs away only to be protected by the person she wanted to stay away from - her mate, Sebastian - and as they search for answers about their past, dangerous people and buried secrets threaten to tear them apart.
"Please Dom," I begged him, my voice barely above a whisper as I fell to my knees.
"I love you. Please don’t do this. I need you."
"I’m sorry," he said again, his voice firm and final as he stared down at me.
"I have to do this. You’re too much of a risk to the pack. I can’t let you stay."
"No Dom," I pleaded with him again, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him.
"DON’T DO THIS!" "I’m sorry Layla," he said again, his voice softer this time.
"It’s for the best. We’ll always have the pack and I’ll always be here for you as your brother. Just not as your mate."
The pain was unbearable as he said those words to me.
I could feel the bond between us snap and break as he said those words to me.
The pain was unbearable and I fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move, I couldn’t do anything but stare at him in shock.
He had been my everything for so long and now he was nothing.
"Please," I begged him, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him.
"Don’t do this. Please don’t do this."
"I’m sorry Layla," he said softly, his eyes filled with regret as he looked down at me.
"I have to do what’s best for the pack. You understand that right?"
"No!" I screamed at him, shaking my head in denial.
"You’re lying! You’re lying!"
I knew it wasn’t true though.
He would never lie to me about something like this.
"It’s over," he said, his voice firm and final this time.
"The bond is broken and you are no longer my mate."
"No!"
I screamed again, shaking my head in denial as I fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
"You don’t mean that Dom. You don’t mean that."
But deep down inside I knew that he did mean it.
He was doing what he had to do for the pack and for his people and there was nothing that I could say or do that would change his mind about it.
"Please," I begged him, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him again.
"Don’t do this. Please don’t do this."
"I’m sorry Layla," he said softly, his eyes filled with regret as he looked down at me.
"I have to do what’s best for the pack. You understand that right?"
It was true though and there was nothing that I could say or do that would change his mind about it.
The bond between us had been broken and we were no longer mates.
I could feel the tear of it deep inside me as I let out another sob and fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
My family and the rest of the pack were watching us from a short distance away, their faces filled with shock and horror as they realised what Dominic had just done to me.
I could feel their eyes on me and I knew that they all thought that it was for the best and that it was for the good of the pack but it didn’t make it any easier to deal with.
The pain was too much and I couldn’t bear to look at them any longer so I turned and ran as fast as I could into the darkness of the forest beyond them.
