After being rejected by her adopted brother, Layla runs away only to be protected by the person she wanted to stay away from - her mate, Sebastian - and as they search for answers about their past, dangerous people and buried secrets threaten to tear them apart.
"Please Dom," I begged him, my voice barely above a whisper as I fell to my knees.
"I love you. Please donā€™t do this. I need you."
"Iā€™m sorry," he said again, his voice firm and final as he stared down at me.
"I have to do this. Youā€™re too much of a risk to the pack. I canā€™t let you stay."
"No Dom," I pleaded with him again, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him.
"DONā€™T DO THIS!" "Iā€™m sorry Layla," he said again, his voice softer this time.
"Itā€™s for the best. Weā€™ll always have the pack and Iā€™ll always be here for you as your brother. Just not as your mate."
The pain was unbearable as he said those words to me.
I could feel the bond between us snap and break as he said those words to me.
The pain was unbearable and I fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
I couldnā€™t breathe, I couldnā€™t move, I couldnā€™t do anything but stare at him in shock.
He had been my everything for so long and now he was nothing.
"Please," I begged him, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him.
"Donā€™t do this. Please donā€™t do this."
"Iā€™m sorry Layla," he said softly, his eyes filled with regret as he looked down at me.
"I have to do whatā€™s best for the pack. You understand that right?"
"No!" I screamed at him, shaking my head in denial.
"Youā€™re lying! Youā€™re lying!"
I knew it wasnā€™t true though.
He would never lie to me about something like this.
"Itā€™s over," he said, his voice firm and final this time.
"The bond is broken and you are no longer my mate."
"No!"
I screamed again, shaking my head in denial as I fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
"You donā€™t mean that Dom. You donā€™t mean that."
But deep down inside I knew that he did mean it.
He was doing what he had to do for the pack and for his people and there was nothing that I could say or do that would change his mind about it.
"Please," I begged him, tears streaming down my face as I reached out for him again.
"Donā€™t do this. Please donā€™t do this."
"Iā€™m sorry Layla," he said softly, his eyes filled with regret as he looked down at me.
"I have to do whatā€™s best for the pack. You understand that right?"
It was true though and there was nothing that I could say or do that would change his mind about it.
The bond between us had been broken and we were no longer mates.
I could feel the tear of it deep inside me as I let out another sob and fell to my knees on the ground in front of him.
My family and the rest of the pack were watching us from a short distance away, their faces filled with shock and horror as they realised what Dominic had just done to me.
I could feel their eyes on me and I knew that they all thought that it was for the best and that it was for the good of the pack but it didnā€™t make it any easier to deal with.
The pain was too much and I couldnā€™t bear to look at them any longer so I turned and ran as fast as I could into the darkness of the forest beyond them.
