Chapter 1
I was looking for a pen pal.
Someone who could tell me about their country, their culture, and their life.
I wanted to learn about the world from someone who lived in it.
So I posted an ad online, asking for someone to write to me.
And Jamie did.
He told me all about his life in Australia, and I told him all about mine in the United States.
We talked about everything and nothing at all.
I craved adventure for as long as I could remember.
It wasn't even that my life was boring.
There was always something to see or do, and I had plenty of friends to do it with.
But there was something out there—something beyond the borders of my tiny town—and I wanted it so badly.
I wanted to see the world outside my window.
To feel the sun on my face and the sand between my toes.
I wanted to go somewhere new, where nobody knew me or my family or any of my secrets.
But most of all… I just didn’t want to be alone anymore.
On a rainy Saturday morning, I decided that enough was enough.
I’d always loved writing and had a few pen pals from school that I exchanged letters with on occasion, but now I wanted something more.
I wanted someone to talk to who could tell me what it was really like to live in another country—someone who would write back and forth with me every day, sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with me without holding anything back.
So after my morning coffee, I turned on my laptop and posted an ad online asking for a pen pal from Australia.
A few hours later, I checked my email and saw that I had received a response from Jamie Richards in Melbourne.
He told me about his family and the beach house where he lived; he described his surroundings so vividly that they came alive in my mind as if they were right there before me.
Soon we were writing back and forth every day, sharing more and more about our lives.
At first, we kept things light—we talked about school or work, our families and friends—but eventually our letters grew more intimate as we began to trust each other more and more.
I told him about my dream of traveling the world, while he revealed how much he loved living by the ocean.
